owl story
« on: December 18, 2014, 04:57:37 PM »
This morning I was hunting one of the QH sites in Lynden. I was doing some soft teal calls in the blind before shooting time, and I saw what I first took to be a large duck swooping right at my head. I quickly realized that it was a small barn owl. I kept calling and remained still. The owl would hover about three feet above my head, look at me and sort of false swoop at me. I think he/she was trying to figure out where the teal was and didn't realize I was even there due to my head to toe camo. Eventually it got tired of me or realized I was human and flew off. I didn't end up getting any ducks but I have a cool story to tell my daughter so it was a good morning. I only wish I had somehow been able to capture the moment on film as it was pretty breathtaking.

My owl story was hunting geese in buck brush and got to the spot a little early.  About 1 hour before shooting time I was laying down and started to shuffle my foot in the sand and grass.  All of the sudden a dark figure buzzed my head only a few inches and started to back flap over my foot that was moving.  I let out a yell in surprise :yike: before I figured out what was happening.  The cool thing was we can hear ducks and geese flying 100's of yards away and I didn't even hear a sound or feel the wind from that owl.

A couple years back my son was walking home from a friends house about 12:30 AM and got dive-bombed by a great-horned owl. It actually knocked his hat off. The hat didn't look anything like something would want to eat. I know they take out some of the neighborhood cats during the summer. You can hear them as they patrol the neighborhoods. It's a pretty unique sound.
