Grey area here. If you plan on ever building into a pistol, state it as such. If only and always a rifle, no worry. You can, as some would say, register it as a handgun, you can always build it into either a handgun or a rifle. Once it is built into a rifle from "registering" It as a rifle, it can not be" legally" built into a handgun..hence, the grey area...who will ever know????

That's why they have the "other category for stripped receivers" That way it does not matter what you build it into. That is why most ffl's will always do them as "other" that way it can be built into what ever the client wants.

If it is done as a pistol then the registration forum is sent in and registered as a handgun. If it's done as other or rifle. Then it is just like any other long gun, 4473 is saved by the ffl and nothing is sent in like we do on handguns.

It may have been done in the "other" category, maybe they meant the ffl just couldn't be done as a "long gun".  I think I will call tomorrow to find out though.

There's no black or white, just "Right" by checking the "Other" box for a stripped lower, you can build a rifle or a pistol with it. A guy spends enough time around AR's they shoot no matter the trigger. For most  the trigger can be a upgrade later, put the cash in a GOOD barrel and build from there. The barrel is everything on a AR, the rest is however it turns out. Mil-Spec is mil-spec and billet is cool.

It would not hurt. It does not matter now since the paper work is done.

Yes, that is how it is properly done. My comment is what, according to the law, could potentially get a person in trouble. Correct, that, once listed as" other" on the 4473, can be built into either a rifle, or a pistol. My point is, as a pistol, it can be converted back to a rifle, then back to a pistol. If the build starts as a rifle, it becomes illegal to be converted to a pistol. Its called constructive possession. This can be verified by your local ATF agent. It is an issue solely for the purchaser at that point, not the ffl holder..hence, the grey area..who will know so to speak..

Yes, you are just posting a fact that does not play into this scenario. Since it was registered as a pistol. I know the laws well :chuckle:

There is no gray you convert a registered rifle to pistol it's :violent1:

That one stems back to my contender days. So that one has been in the memory banks for awhile.

I don't plan on any time at the big house so it's a must know for me :chuckle: I don't get to blame the employees  :chuckle:
