2014 Hunt-WA Horn Competition
«
on:
December 21, 2014, 12:28:28 PM »
It's that time of year again, time to post up the best of the best.
2014 Horn Competition
Rules:
1. Deer, Moose, Sheep, Goat, & Elk legally harvested during any open season in Washington from Sept 1 to Dec 31, 2014 may be entered
2. Washington Hunting License & Tags: A current WDFW hunting license and appropriate tag is required
3. Membership: Hunters entering the contest must be forum members prior to the start of the season in which the animal was harvested
4. Entries: The hunter must submit a story of the hunt, picture of the animal, general location where taken, and claimed score on hunting-washington.com. If either a Blacktail Deer or Roosevelt Elk are being entered, the location must be specific enough to distinguish what species/sub species of Deer or Elk it is.
5. Scoring System: The official B & C or P & Y scoring system will be used.
6. Winner Determination: The score that compares highest in percentage to the state record for that species, horn type (typical or non-typical), and weapon wins. For example, a modern firearm typical mule deer will be compared to the state record modern firearm typical mule deer and an archery net non-typical whitetail will be compared to the record archery net non-typical whitetail. There will be three different weapon categories; modern firearm, muzzleloader, and archery. Washington Big Game Records will be used as the state records.
7. Prizes: A perpetual (traveling) trophy will be awarded to the winner to keep for 11-1/2 months. Hopefully we can get a few gifts of nominal value donated by some of our sponsors.
8. Judge Discretion: Judges may challenge any entry. Judges may require the top entries to get an official score.
9. The entry deadline for the 2014 contest will be March 31, 2015. The hunter must be a hunting-washington.com member prior to Sept. 1 of the contest year.

Every time I see that buck I do a double take and imagine how much fun that would of been to shoot that with a long bow.

Rifle Nontypical whitetail. Gmu154. Story will be in the january copy of Horns and Hooks. Check it out. Not sure how to copy my thread in the deer section to paste.Had my buck rescored at the Portland sportsmans show and it gained a few inches from the quick green score I posted earlier. New official is 191 6/8. It will be #12 in the book. Total gross 200 3/8

Nice buck bone. Do you know whatthe typical long bow record is? For the sake of my taking that trophy home, I hope its 250. Oh wait I think archery typical is 204. That would mean you have me beat. Dangit

Well! Passed on 2 spikes the first week. I didn't see another elk for a week. I am running out of time and getting burned out. The 10th day I finely found a shooter. 1.5 to 2 miles away. I ran back to the truck and put the metal to the pedal. Picked up my buddy and closed the distance. I made it around the canyon and was about 1/2 mile away. I spotted him and he was feeding alone a half mile down the steep canyon. I left my buddy to glass and I drove down and parked the rig. I needed to move fast and light. So I just left with my hunting vest and my rifle. It took me about 45 min's to find him. I stalked the bull with in 360 yards. I was busted as I poisoned for the shot. He was looking right at me
.
But I lucked out and I be came a rock. 2 minutes passed and he went back to feed again.
I lucked out. I took the shot and he dropped right as my buddy spotted him in the Bino's. He said it was cool to watch the action unfold and the BULL drop. He tried to get up again and I lost it. Buck fever and free handing it now
BOOM , BOOM , BOOM, BOOM , BOOM. Lucky for him I ran out of ammo. Hit 3 times rolled out of sight in a deep creek.
But long story short. Bull down at 3:30pm Wednesday in barber springs 340 unit. October 29th 2014. Finished quartering bull and hung in the tree by 1 am. Back to camp by noon Thursday. Took care of the front shoulders and head/hide. Run in to town for supply's and drinks. Back to camp by 9 pm to camp. Dinner and drinks and in bed by 2 am. Up at 5am and waited for my buddy to come back from the morning hunt and all three of us pack the rest out Friday morning. What a work out for a big guy. But it was well worth the effort. Had it scored BC final score was 321 2/8th BC 6x6. Used my Browning BLR in 300 win mag.

bear hunter - Even if your elk is not a winner...that is one beautiful bull! I have taken a couple 320 something bulls and neither looks that impressive! Very nice
So when is the official Boneaddict score coming?

Thanks RadSav
It is a trophy to me and I love the shape and color. I don't think I will ever have a chance for a bigger bull in my life time.
I was only going to do a euro mount, but I saved the hide just in case I changed my mind. All my hunting buddy's and friend said to have him mounted. I gave in and he is at the taxidermist's now. He will have his head semi turned bugling. I can't wait to see him finished. Only thing is I have no room for the mount and my buddy said I can keep it at his house until I buy my own place.

I haven't been able to get ahold of him. I'm worried about him actually. I missed the sports show with my doubles. Unofficial might have to do for now.

According to my research and math, this is where we are at:
boneaddict
-Archery Typ Muley=X/203.875=??% (X) must be greater than 165.14
stew pidasso
-Rifle(?) Non-typ Eastern Whitetail=191.75/236.625=81.0%
bear hunter
-Rifle, Typ, Rocky Mtn Elk=321.25/423.0=76.0%
Three very nice entries.
