Modern radial tire plys have about zero in common with the ancient bias ply construction.

Bias ply tires needed 6,8,10 ply etc for the load they were rated to carry.

A load range E radial is 10 ply equivalent.  That doesn't mean they're 10 ply, that means they'll carry the same load an old 10 ply bias tire will.

I think a lot of you guys would be surprised if you looked at how many plys your tires actually have vs what the tire store told you they have.

True reading more about these tires they only have 3 plys not the 10 I thought before. From my investigation the only difference between load range now is how much psi the tires will handle. The ST Maxx will handle 80 psi making it load range E. Reading on Exposition Portal guys run these tires on Tacomas, 4Runners, Explorers and they run lower psi to compensate.

I'm aware this thread has been dead for a month but for anyone reading it...

I know it's cliché but the Nitto 315/75/16 I've ran are well worth the money.  Incredible traction in both the trail and mud grapplers.  Worked well for towing and solid load range.

I ran the Cooper ST's for a few years but wasn't impressed with how they held up with offroad time.  Sidewalls were lacking in strength I thought.

I've ran 2 sets of the original ST's  as well as a set of the STT's several years back as well. This new ST Maxx is quite a different tire. I wouldn't compare the two in terms of judging the new Maxx off of the older ST model. :twocents:

I've got the ST Maxx on one of my trucks and it seems a little more at home on a lighter (half-ton) pickup.

They have a 3 ply sidewall which is quite rare these days, most tires, even E rated ones only have 2 ply sidewalls. Go down to the side shop and grab ahold of one and you understand real quick why they are such a tough tire.

I've had them on my '11 F150 ecoboost crew 4wd for 60,000mi. They have never flatted and I pound them chukar hunting, flatted stockers 4 times prior to replacing with the Maxx's. They've gotten slightly noisier with age but it's still more than acceptable. Not the greatest wet pavement or ice tire because they don't have a ton of siping not that it's actually ever been an issue, just the truth.  I will run on my next truck too but will likely have the center lugs lightly siped to better the traction.

I ran ST Maxx on my Duramax (285 x16) and got 55K out of them and I used them hard.  Always ran Coopers til one time tried Toyo MT- crappiest tire I ever had - got 22-24K and gone....  Right now I am waiting for the dealer installed tires on my Ram to be bad then going back to Cooper ST max's again...    Normally put 40K+ per year on truck so get new tires every 18 months or so...

I ran them on my Duramax and they were good tires, they just didn't last as long as I expected.  I had 10 ply 285s on it and I got about 35000 mile out of them with regular rotations.  That was a couple years ago, so maybe the quality has improved.  I loved the Cooper AT3's, they were a great, long lasting tire.
My worst set has to be the Mickey Thompson ATZ's I am currently running.  I have taken them to 3 different shops to have them balanced, and no one can do it.  I like the fact that they are not loud on the road and get decent traction, but at 45mph I feel like Im on a washboard.  When they wear out I am going back to the Coopers.

In general Cooper is a pretty good tire company. Most all of their tires are made here in the USA. They also make a lot of Private lable tires for larger tire dealers. I know that they have made some of the tires for Les Schwab in the past, as well as no name lables for other franchies.

Cooper Tires are the only tires at LS that I would consider running anymore.

Had the tires installed this morning (after a long wait due to nation wide back order, found the tires in Idaho finally).

They fit great! Had the truck in 4 wheel drive today at work in some mud and they performed very well. However, I had to make a run over to Seattle and the tires performance on the highway was not very good, they rolled very badly and drove like I had 37" tires on 15" rims!! It was much like driving a boat when quick input was given at high speeds. I have driven lifted trucks with much larger tires my whole life and have not had such bad handling. So on this note I am not very pleased with the tires, but it is not to the point where I am going to go on record as saying I would not recommend them, as the road manners at high speeds were not so bad I won't get used to it. But they are bad enough I won't be excited about my wife taking the truck on the free way, for fear she won't be able to handle the truck in a quick reaction scenario.

I am sure these tires would do much better with 20" rims in this size 295/70, which most guys run. I have 18's.

Anyway, I am going to check the pressure in them tomorrow and I will check back in a few months with a more detailed report!

Thanks,
H&F
