New guy...first post.
« on: September 09, 2007, 08:56:33 PM »
Hello guys,

I came across a thread over on MM that lead me to this site.  I am glad to be here, as it can be difficult to get much information specific to Washington State over there.  Hunting-Washington.com is bookmarked now!

I was hoping you guys could get me off on the right foot regarding elk hunting.  I have been hunting in Idaho, as I will this year, mainly because I don't even know where to begin in this state.  I have been chomping at the bit to just get out and do some glassing for animals, but don't know where to start.  My roommate is starting to get the bug to elk hunt, and will tag along for the first 3-4 days this year to get a taste of what why we love to hunt.  I am hoping he gets bit by the bug so I can have a hunting buddy to learn the land with.

I am a rifle hunter, but the decision to hunt this state will be a couple of years away, as I would like to spend time learning the land up here.  I am fairly new to elk hunting, as a tag holder.  I have spent many years tagging along with family on elk hunts either in Arizona or Idaho.  I am out here on my own sort a speak, so I don't have previous family members experiences on areas to hunt to fall back on.  I am creating my own.

This is a beautiful state, and I would love to hunt from home, rather than travel to another state to hunt.  It's time my dad and brother come here to hunt with me :)

Thanks in advance for any advice guys.  Thanks for having me...

Gary

Shirt... Welcome aboard. Where in Arizona did you hunt? I have hunted all over there when I lived there. I grew up west of Phoenix. I know what you mean about not having family around. I am here on my own. I have hunted some of the coast area for deer and elk. Now I am going to try the east side and up in this area. You are not to far from me.

Hello Shadow Cat,

We were up on the Kaibab a few times when I was a kid, and hunted deer on the strip a few time.  My dad and uncle had great success 1 year and brought out 2 very respectable bulls.  My dad developed Recoil Anxiety over the years and it greatly diminished his success.  He now has it figured out and is back in the game after a 10 hiatus.
Lived in Phoenix for about 4 years, but spent much of my youth in Prescott, and a had a spell in Oregon, hunting around Seneca.
It is tough getting those of us who hunt in our family together because we are so spread out.  We will be putting in for Arizona hunts within the next couple of years, and will continue our General Season hunts in Idaho until I become more familiar here.
I would love to get those guys over here for elk hunting.
