which gun/ tips for hunting in the dark?
« on: December 29, 2014, 10:47:38 PM »
I plan on targeting coyotes in one of my day stands that hasnt been productive during the day, but always see coyotes running across the highway in the night.seen a pair of tracks in there this morning after the snow. What should I take? Muzzy or shotgun? It should be bright enough to shoot without a spotlight so I am leaning towards muzzy. And any tips that I should focus on? I know where they come down through a fence at and what canyon they travel in, but only seen them once in the day time a year ago.

Thinking rabbit distress but never seen rabbits in there so leaning toward rodent the most and in the day serenade calls from the e caller as that is what the coyotes in the area have been vocal with during the day.

If I do get a shot in the morning, I hope to not piss off the nearest home owners a mile away :chuckle:.

Any helpful suggestions willhelp me a ton.

Nach,
Aguilla Subsonic Sniper 22LR (62 gr) KNOW YOUR BACKSTOP.
I use a squeeker. We know what time they come to the yard due to the racket.
Snow makes a world of difference. Shots are close and these loads will pass through the dog and into the coop.
They dont like the yard lights..... and my 10/22 doesnt like the loads so I use a pump carbine, open sighted. Suppose I could move a red dot onto it.
Quiet and works well. Can be very cold though.
Shotgun would be better but would wake someone up :dunno:
Have fun. Ive used archery equipment when I lived in town.
Pavement, crowds and inaccurate rifles...
Thanks anyway.

Shotgun is what I use at night. #4 buck.  Imo even though its bright with the snow and you can see, you'll find out most of the time your only seeing silhouette's, in the low light having the shotgun will shine with the 2nd shot.   if the house is a mile away you won't be waking anyone up.  Rodent work well but don't rule out an old fashion ambush. When I'm hunting educated dogs I often use the ambush and no sounds at all. Feathers on a string hung up away from me will perk their interest.

I've shot 2 coyote with the 22lr. 1st @ <10 yards 2nd @ 56yards. Both double lung. Both ran about 100 yards.   tracking at night is a pain even with snow.  :twocents:

One more thing I've learned. Put a peace of paper in your window of your rig, stating you are predator hunting at night, name or wild id# and cell #. This can save you a pain in the neck if someone does call Leo from hearing a shot. Lots of people think hunting at night is illegal. Calling leo's ahead of time and giving them a heads up is even better

:yeah:
I remember contacting the local gamey......
Going to be out in the duckboat spotlighting varmints.
What kind? he ask......
I state "if it eats duck eggs I'm killing it" (nesting season in the potholes)
All he wanted after that was where I was parked and what I was driving.

All we saw were deer, lots of deer. The grass was too high to see anything else.
Pretty cool how the fish would leap when we lit'em up.
Never fired a shot on that trip and never heard back from the wdfw officer.
Good time none the less.
Pavement, crowds and inaccurate rifles...
Thanks anyway.

(Real good advice here)

I highly recommend doing this as well as Fish and game.
Use high pitched sounds, Woodpecker, Vole squeak Etc. If they are around this should bring then in , Last resort pup distress. Call quietly
