Wolf or not a Wolf? Opinions please
« on: December 30, 2014, 08:25:29 AM »
This came up on my trail cam, unfortunately this is the best pic I have of it. Looks like there is a red collar on it (not sure if this could be a GPS collar). I have had a few hikers on this cam but nothing within weeks of when this popped up.

Curled up tail.  It's a dog.

USFWS Mexican grey wolf, remember many of their fake wolves had curled up tails and had to be shot. Too much dog in their breeding program

wolves don't generally walk with rear feet apart like that - tracks are closer together.....

Domestic dog.

On these "wolf or not" threads...anyone else notice that a significant number of them turn out that the consensus of forum members is that it is not a wolf?

And on a related topic...notice how some folks villify WDFW for "hiding" how many wolves there are because a biologist occasionally has the audacity to suggest to some folks what they saw or got a photo of was not a wolf?

I wonder if the "wolf or not" posts to Hunt-WA are similar to what WDFW gets called about on a regular basis?  Food for thought.  :twocents:

Looks like a radio collar on right side of neck. Seems odd to me that a dog would have a side mount radio collar device rather than in front of its windpipe. Wind direction and speed could cause the tail to appear curled/flared.  :dunno:

I vote wolf.

Looks wolfy to me as well.  Hard to say with the angles and conditions the pic was taking.

Domestic Canid.  Most notably, one of the "curled" tail variety.

Well shoot. Those views look more like the collar doesn't have a side mounted device. I change my vote. Fito

I'm in the husky/malamute camp on this one from the lloks of things. Once they get out of their yard they love to run and roam.
There is no greater respect to have for wildlife than to harvest an animal fairly and use it's flesh to feed your family.  ~me

Just my  :twocents: ,
1) if logic dictates there are a significant amount more dogs than wolves in Washington most questions that come up on here are going to accordingly be dog...

2) most of the individuals who take the time to report a wolf citing have enough savvy/knowledge to do so with alot of confidence after gathering their thoughts on what they saw...

3) I'm sure alot of the honest "what do all of you knowledgeable outdoorsmen think" is this a wolf or not threads are what the wdfw get...

I wish I could find the thread started by one of our members a couple years ago with actual photos of dogs submitted as wolf sightings that were reported by people who swore up and down these dogs they reported were wolves.

Sure but my thought being overall percentage with the point from #1 being at least a reasonable submition...

Maybe I'm giving to much credit out but out of the 4-5 times I've questioned what I saw, I've reported 2 instances and been 99.9% sure it was a wolf  :dunno:

I myself thought this looked more like a dog, the weird thing is this is about a 3 mile hike in, not that hikers don't come in here because they do, however this set off my camera and I had 4 shots of him, no hikers. I suppose someone could have walked by while the camera was recovering.
