Day pack that can hold a broken down blacktail?
« on: January 04, 2015, 08:45:44 PM »
I am looking at getting a ways off the roads next year and want to find a decent but not really expensive pack. The distances I am looking at are short enough that it is a day hunt but long enough and over rough enough terrain that I dont want to make a trip to the truck to grab a pack or try dragging a deer. I saw on Cameron Hane's blacktail DVD he showed a pack like this but I dont remember what it was. I am looking for the most compact pack I can find that is big enough to hold an average blacktail buck when its broken down. The one in the DVD he left the quarters bone in and deboned the rest and got it in one trip. Anyone know of a specific pack that fits the bill? I would love to get a Badlands or Eberlstock if I can pull off the cash by next season but I may not be able to spend that much.

The pack you're talking about is a Tenzing. I recommend you read reviews before buying one.

For a quality, low cost pack I can recommend the Kelty "Bison," which I'm not even sure is made anymore. Almost every site I looked at when I did a Google search, showed it being sold out, except for this site:

http://www.barronmall.com/kelty-bison-3300-camouflage-backpack-25905080-727880797690.html

I don't think you can beat it for $119 and free shipping.

I have the same pack and I've used it a lot but only for hauling apples, and that's a pretty heavy load when I fill it to the top. I've never had a deer in it but that's because I also have a Eberlestock, which I usually hunt with, but I'm probably going to start using the Kelty a lot more, since it weighs about half of what the Eberlestock weighs.

The Eberlestock will haul more meat, but the Kelty will easily haul one partially boned out deer.

The KUIU Ultra 3000 is a great daypack and designed so whatever you want to haul meatwise just gets strapped in a bag in between the pack and the carbon fiber frame.  We hauled 90# no problem but there's a pic on here with a guy with two elk quarters and the head on it.  All your gear stays clean and in place when you pack meat.

Yea its more than you want to spend but worth a look.  Best part is it weighs about 2 pounds.

I have a Jim Shockey Signature Series pack and frame combo. It's 4,400 cu, and has treated me pretty well. I picked it up from Cabelas for about $250 about 4 years ago. I haven't had a deer in it, but I've seen elk and caribou packed out with it on youtube. If it falls into the budget range I would recommend it.
There is something just indescribably painful about being stuck behind a prius on the interstate.
