towel or blanket over crste

:yeah: We recently got another puppy. Really helped to completely cover the crate with a blanket. But with a puppy that young there is no way around multiple bathroom breaks at night. The time in-between pees should get a little longer each night. Mine is 11 weeks now and usually makes it through the night without waking us up.

Things are finally starting to slow down, We put a hot water bottle in there every night and I found a clock that has a pretty loud tick, we have starting  taking him for a swift walk right before bed and that seems to be doing the trick, He is only getting up once or twice a night now. I see the light at the end of the tunnel  8)

That is great news!!! We are tackling the creating while at work thing now.  I was keeping her in the small create that she sleeps in thinking she would feel more secure...wrong! So I bumped up to a medium with some shreaded newspaper in there planning on some pee or poop for a while.  Long story short, we are on day 3 of pee and poo free.  Also makes for a good excuse to leave work right on time.  Feel free to PM me with questions or ideas for me since we seem to be going through this interesting time at about the same time.

Thats awesome, sounds like things are starting to settle down in your house as well. Our crate is med size and really doesn't give him aywhere to poop or pee, so far he hasn't gone once in it. Our pup will be 7 wks old tomorrow and always goes pee outside when we take him, last night he waited by the backdoor to go but no one got over in time to let him out. At least he now knows that the place to go is outside instead of inside ......Making progress

6 1/2 weeks is to young to seperate, 8 weeks,Richard Wolters 7 weeks is Bullarky, weaning young creates clingy neurotics IMO,I've seen the outcome of it many times. What I would suggest and what I do when seperating pups from a litter is......... Take a bath towel  back to where you got the pup and rub down momma and the remaining littermates, the familiar scent of family will calm and make the pup more at home and secure, far less whining.Take a couple for when there is an accident.

I will let Gobble answer for himself...Unless Bullarky is some author/trainer we can just agree to disagree. Cedar has been a wonderful dog with no issues with separation. Debating the age for separating is for another thread I think...of course we are all entitled to our own opinion.  Gobble, glad to see things turning your way

I'm not down with 6 weeks. Gal i know just got a chocolate from the breeder on an island. She had 11 or 12 pups so probably didn't want the mess of that many 7 to 8 week old puppies. Obviously experienced. lol.

The last two weeks is hell as a breeder cleaning up and feeding. There is a reason some folks say 6 weeks. They can't take doing the work anymore is the only one.

I do think 8 wks is perfect for seperating mom and pups, it gives them time to grow up a little and develop, but I didn't have a choice so with that said my pup is showing no ill effects from being seperated at 6 wks, after the first week with us he is now settling down perfectly, pooping and peeing outside and only getting up at 4:00am to pee (which is when I leave for work) he is turning into a good little guy. I have been working with him on retreiving and until yesterday really didn't show alot of interest. Now he is starting to go after balls and a training dummy, sometimes bringing back and sometimes not, he is young and right now as long as he shows interest in going after the dummy at short distances Im good with that, he will be just fine. Little steps......... :chuckle:

Yeah I know your original post was not to elicit lectures but to share some struggles.  Glad to hear things are working well.  My little girl is having fun being a puppy, which can be trying at times.  I haven’t done a lot with retrieving aside from rolling the toy out 4 or 5 times then calling it good, she is bringing it right back though.  Did the wing test when I picked her.  I am sure you are like me and read a lot since it has been a while since you trained.  Don’t forget the hallway technique…worked great with my last dog…if I can remember that long ago.  Life is so great with a dog in the house!!! Enjoy and keep us posted.  I still can’t upload a picture for some reason…any ideas  :bash:?
