Coyote gun advice
« on: January 07, 2015, 10:09:42 AM »
As the title suggests, I'm looking for suggestions on some solid coyote guns.   With as many as there are in the areas that I frequent, my wife has made her demands that she wants fur for the walls. I have a 30'06 which isn't exactly fur friendly, but don't really have any experience with anything smaller, except .22. Which is too small. Give me everything you got! I need to do my research and get a realistic price figured to pitch to aforementioned wife.

Get yourself a bolt .223.  Should do everything you need.  Look at the new Ruger American.  They get really good accuracy reviews, and are a faster twist barrel.

:yeah: I've got a Savage Mod 10 predator with a Nikon BDC scope on it and it shoots one hole at 100yds off the bench with factory Hornady 55g loads.  About as easy as it gets.

You need to decide if you just want a fur friendly rifle or if you want to get all crazy on loads for it and all the details that guys can get into.

IF you are just looking for a coyote rifle.  I'd go with 223 because of easy ammo.  Shoot JHP or even ballistic tips and aim for the shoulder not behind.  You won't have an exit.

Realistically, I just need a fur friendly rifle to start. I'm already gna have to shell out the cash for a gun even if I want to get into reloading. One thing at a time.

I'd contact Carp, tell him you need a bolt gun in the smaller calibers....maybe .223 or .243 for a yote gun and get a good deal on one that can be loaded for yotes/deer.

Don't forget to add a good 12 gauge shotgun to the list of coyote harvesting tools.  It is very justified for the task.  That and a EJ Sceery AP1 rodent coaxer and you will practically feel that coyote paws running up your knickers to get at that mouse squeaker.  Usually first round is BB's followed by #4 buck, then #1 buck or 00.

Before laying out the cash for a new gun + scope etc., give these a try . . .

So, you're sitting on a stump with your 'Ought-6, waiting fruitlessly for a 4-point to walk by and a 'yote shows up.

The bolt action 222 is also a really accurate rifle and is very fur friendly.  Have had the remington version for years, great little gun for coyotes.  And there fairly inexpensive to buy and shoot.

204 Ruger. If you handload, use the Berger 35gr. If you don't use the Hornady 32gr factory loads. Drops coyotes like thunder and usually leaves NO exit wound. I've used everything from .223, 22-250, .257 roberts, and .243. Always had problems blowing huge exit holes.

The .222 is good choice, so is the 17 Rem, but I've found the .17 to be iffy dropping coyotes consistently. When you hit them right, it'll drop them solid, if not ... well I found out a .17 Rem doesn't leave much of a blood trail.

Since you have a 30-06 I know of a buddy ho shot a coyote during the deer season using the all copper Barnes TSX bullets and it dropped it cleanly and the bullet didn't blow up and it penciled right through it. But these were handloads.

Good luck

I'd get a 223 as they seem to be a decent round and do minimal fur damage with a well placed 52 gr a max. I personally don't like the 204 and smaller calibers. I would stay away from the accelerators out of a 06 to random in accuracy.

.223 if you limit shots to 250 yards, 22-250 is best all round coyote gun. I have shot coyotes, one right in front of Bearmanric, at about 250 yards,  223, 55 grain soft point, enters does not exit, coyote runs 50 yards. enters behind last rib on right side, aims at left side front shoulder, bullet holes thru heart and lungs. Same range same shot 22-250 dead on the spot. or move to a 243.
My all time fav. dedicated coyote gun 22-250, Bolt.

I second the .204 ruger. I've shot 3 coyotes with mine and the 32 gr vmax. No exit on any of them and down right there. Not a huge sample size but I'm happy so far. I'm loading the 35 Bergers now, so hopefully I can find a coyote to shoot soon.
