Wyoming Deer Hunt

I was wondering if anybody has any info they would share on a limited hunt unit for somebody with 4pts? Would it be best to wait a couple more years or apply for a second choice hunt and save my points? Basically, I would like to know if somebody has any info on a decent unit I can draw with 4 points? Not looking for a honey hole, just help on a unit. Thanks in advance!

Region G, IMHO, is your best bet with 4 points.  This requires though that you be able to hike in a few miles, uphill; or hire a packer for a drop camp.  For a truck hunt on BLM, 37 Type 1 or 84 Type 1, are decent options.  However, if you can do the high country hunt, Region G is better than the limited quota hunt areas.

i also recommend region G.  Most of the outfitters are booked 2 - 3 years in advance for this region but if you want a DIY experience you can backpack in 5 - 6 miles into remote drainages and have good opportunity.

No option to leave the first choice blank and then fill in choices 2&3?

No, but you can put in first choice an area that has no prayer of a draw first choice (unless you have max points, or hit the random draw less than 1% odds).  Then if you draw 2nd or 3rd you can keep your points and get another, and if you do hit that first choice, its probably well worth it.

I have either 3 or 4 points going into this year. I wasn't too concerned about it last year but I hope there's a good 7+ point draw unit or two out there that I can plug in at #1.

Try 128 Type 1 - you shouldn't have any trouble not drawing!  14% draw success with 8 points in 2014, 0% with <8

If you draw region G feel free to hit me up for 2 honey holes.  One is easily accessible, and pretty easy hiking.  My biggest buck came in this location.  The other is on a seriously steep mountain that tops out at 10,000' and holds big bucks.  We camped over night on the mountain and came home with a nice, wide 4-point.  My buddy saw an absolute monster laying in the wide open near the top of the mountain the evening before the opener after we hiked up and set up camp.  Something spooked it and it ran over the other side, never to be seen again.  As I remember, the hike was only a couple of miles but the steepness and elevation were very challenging.  These 2 areas are not far from the Star Valley area.

Here's a pic of the steep mountain I was referring to.  Not a hike for the out of shape or faint of heart.   We ended up roping down my buddy's buck from the shorter cliff face below the tall cliff face just under the pointy top of the mountain.

Little story behind the pic.  It was taken the year after we deer hunted that mountain after my brother and I dragged my elk down to the flat.  While we were deer hunting the previous year we saw a herd of elk on the opposite mountain on 2 consecutive days so the next year, with just one hunting day left after killing my buck we showed up where we had seen the elk and the herd was there again.  Don't ask me why I hunted deer first and left one day to hunt elk.  My priorities were obviously screwed up!

How long ago did you hunt there band? Where's the pics of the bucks? My uncle and dad hunted that unit this last season. My uncle got a 2.5 year old 4 point and dad are the tag. They hunted long and hard and dad couldn't find a buck big enough to put a tag on. They talked to a game warden up there and he said almost all of the bucks shot around there are 2.5 year olds. They didn't see any big bucks or see anyone with a big buck. They need more time to grow!

It has been awhile - I believe 1999 was the last year I deer hunted there (the year I got the big one).  I can't account for how the deer population might have changed since then.  My brother got one of those young bucks, a 1.5 year old I'm sure.  Compare to the size of the big one I got.

Nice buck! My dad had hunted there in like 2004 and before that and then went back last year and said it had changed a lot. I havnt been over there personally so I can't really say how it is but that's what they told me.

I have 3 points for WY deer and it looks like I may be able to draw G it in the special draw. Too many locals hunting it has really hurt the deer in that unit. WY may go to residents having to choose a deer area, that would take a lot of pressure off G. I hunted it with a friend 10 years ago awesome country. I'd like to hunt it one more time before I get too old.

As a reference, and to be "that guy", if you hunt wilderness you need a guide. There should be 1000's and 1000's of acres and areas you can hunt without paying for a guide. If you decide to pay for a guide (usually upwards of 4-5000) I'd suggest non-typical outfitters. They are top notch in my opinion. Another neat thing about guiding in Wyoming, they are given 100 sq miles that they are "allowed to hunt". Meaning they can't go into some other outfitters drainage to hunt. You or I could hunt all we wanted there unless it is wilderness. If you have a friend that is a resident they can fill out a paper and get a "guide's" license for a year to go with you into the wilderness. I agree with the above, about Region G being awesome. It does get a lot of pressure but there are quality deer to be had. If you are looking for once in a life time type, save up and put in for 128-1...Rut hunt near Dubois for mule deer. From what I know it is the only rut hunt in a true winter ground in the state for trophy mule deer.

The drag out wasn't bad since both of those came from within 1/4 mile of a drivable road and it was downhill.  We were separated at the time so we both dragged out our own bucks.  Mine was tougher to deal with than his due to its body size.
