The making of a bird dog
« on: January 10, 2015, 02:06:16 PM »
Or at least a bird chaser!   :chuckle:   I've had my 5 month old brit out on birds several times now.  I've been pleasantly surprised at her progress so far.  She went from not being interested in birds and polishing my boots, to holding decent points and ranging 70-80 yards out in just three sessions. The first portion of the video was her second outing on a bird I dizzied for her, and the second part was her third outing on a bird I released, and she found all on her own a while later.  I'll continue to work her on her birds, slowly begin the yard work, and introduce her to the shot.  In late April she will be off to the trainer to finish the yard work and get her ready to hit the ground running in SD at summer camp.  So far I like what I see.

Had her out again this weekend.  I'm starting to get pretty excited about this pup.  She's ranging further and holding her points better every outing.  Her confidence and independence is growing by the day, yet she will still go with me in the field with little handeling.  Yesterday I let her go and she hit 150 yards before slamming on point.  She held it the entire time while I covered the distance.  She didn't move until I got to her and then she flushed the bird and had a blast chasing.  I'm going to introduce her to the shot in the next couple weeks and then start killing a few birds for her.  It's still way too early to tell, but I think I got a good one.

Looking good, I hadn't owned a dog in 25 years after growing up with GSP's. Two years ago I ended up with two GSP pups, glad I'm retired. I hope you have as much fun as I am, she sounds like a great dog. Congratulations on a good pick.
