Coyote gun question
« on: January 12, 2015, 06:40:20 PM »
I can't find any info on this. Do you know if you can hunt coyotes with both a rifle and a shotgun at the same time?

I believe you can as I hear more serious coyote hunters carry a shotgun for close shots and a rifle for the longer ranges. Of course ive only used my 243 the few times I've gone so I'm no expert so like anything that's said online please feel free to salt my words to taste.

I've been doing this for a few years, and so far the shotgun has come in handy. I loader up with #4 buck.

12ga over a rifle barrel, works for me.  Savage 24's suck( and yes I owned one) for coyotes takes too long to fool with the selector and you can't mount a scope low enough to get a good cheek weld and still be able to cock the thing or change the selector.  A combo with two triggers and a safety/hammerless is the way to go.

And a bunch more.

Less weight, less cumbersome, and less movement on the stand when the coyote comes in.  As far as only two shots, don't miss, and I've never gotten more than a double with any gun in the winter.  The rifle trigger on this one is a set trigger and it is more than capable to 300yrds,

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Make mine a Minaska

I have a light weight 223 Stevens 200 and good ol Mossberg 500 that I tend to pack. Most of my shots end up being with the shotgun from 10-35 yards or so. I tend to keep the shotgun across my lap and 223 leaning on shooting sticks in a position that will allow me to pick it up with little movement. It is a pain to pack both around if you hike much to get to and from spots but I believe it is worth it. When I only take the rifle they pop up at 15 yards and dont give me a chance to find them in the scope. Then if I only take the shotty, they hang up at 150  :bash: It is all a mute point though since most of the area I hunt now (due to Weyerhauser permit only) is in firearm restricted and the shotty is my only option.
