Bella chased down some 747's
« on: January 11, 2015, 04:10:58 PM »
Well my young lab Bella reached another milestone today.  We got a couple geese about a half hour apart.  She out swam them and then got control of two big honkers that had only a busted wing on each one.  Once she caught up to them, one of them tried diving for a bit to get away and the other beat her with it's wings until she got control of it.  I'm pretty proud of my girl.  I think I enjoy watching a dog work more than the actual hunting of the birds.  A bird that big that's not going willingly to a dog is quite a wrestling match.  Both birds were to far out for me to help her.  It was fun when she launched out after them.  She was in a higher gear than she is with ducks.  She was making a serious wake while in pursuit.  She brought them back very alive and delivered to hand.  She looks kinda proud of herself in the pic's!

Also take a peak at this divers head.  It had one of those elastic hair bands wrapped around it head and embedded in it's mouth.  I'm glad I shot it.  That would not be a good thing for the duck to try and live with.

That looks like a great hunt, I have not shot any geese this season.

Great looking dog. Looks like Bella's a keeper. Wish I had a dog to hunt with, cause it's a whole different hunt when you have a dog. That's crazy the hair band deal.

Thats pretty sweet. I agree, I like watching the dogs the best. Making the shot, sure that bring some satisfaction of course but really, its all about the dogs. She's come a long way from the puppy that runs back and forth in the front seat of the truck for sure.

Hmm....got a shotgun....what else would one need to tag along one of these days?

GSP -  This was my first crack at some geese this season.  These weren't cacklers either the bigger one weighed in at 15 pounds.  I like big geese, reminds me of when I used to live in Klamath Falls...

H20 - Yes, you have known Bella from the early days.  Work with them enough and they will reward you for sure.  She's a big strong girl now that has some skills.

H20 - On your inquiry on tagging along.  There are two weekends left in the season.  Probably best we take you out next season for a morning to get the feel for things.  To tag along you will also need a small game license, a state migratory bird permit, and a federal bird stamp.  You look strong too, I like that for packing decoys.  I had a young fella pack two large decoy bags with 4 dozen decoys each out a while back.  Chest waders are a must too.

Moocher - I hear you.  When our pups leave this world it hurts.  I also have a 14.5 yr old girl now and I know that days coming.

NRA - Smug or proud I think she was feeling pretty good about things.
