More wolves spotted in Whitman County
« on: January 15, 2015, 09:16:24 AM »
My dad owns a house in Sunset, a small community of houses just west of Thornton in Whitman County and the neighbor spotted some big tracks in his horse pasture and notified his wife to have her keep an eye on the horses and a day later she spotted 2 wolves on the hill above the house. Fish and Game came out and put up a camera and got pics of 2 wolves roaming the area. Just an FYI!

Good to hear they were on the ball...did they share the pics with you?

Interesting. The snake river breaks seem like an area that might hold a few. Seems Strange to see them on the plateau though. Spent alot of time out there when going to wsu.

I didnt get to see the pics, my dad just told me what the landowner who called WDFW told him when he was checking on his property next door. I guess the F&W predator specialist from Spokane came down and put up the camera's. :dunno: Is there a biologist working with wolves in Spokane? My parent's also own a house at Rock Lake and my dad swears he heard a wolf howling about a week ago up the lake towards Bonnie Lake and the hole in the ground. Over the last 3 yrs several people have seen the wolves around Rock Lake. Now they are eating Art's sheep and prowling around other people's livestock and being spotted 12 miles to the East of Swannack's and all around the canyon that hold's Rock and Bonnie Lake from Turnbull clear to Lacrosse. It's quite a large area really.

Not surprised. I think the Bio lives in St. John area, so right next to Rock lake. His name is Joey McCanna

That is pretty funny Rick. I took my son out grouse hunting close to you and at dusk they started going off at wolf haven.  He started walking allot faster back to the truck.

same here.  Even had a friend approached and fallowed back to her truck hunting the cpwma hunt for elk.  She thought it was a coyote but it followed her from 25-40 yards and she said it was waist high. Next day we checked the tracks.

I seen two wolves two years ago roaming around right around Ewan when I was pheasant hunting on some feel free to hunt land.  Not a very good feeling when you only have bird shot with you and one dog. Anyway everyone said no way you didn't see any wolves in Whitman County. I know what I saw that day and it was enough to get me and my dog the hell out of there since wolves are known to come in closer when you have dogs with you. Wish I would of reported it but it just seemed so weird at the time. They were every bit of maybe 500 yards out heading in our direction. I just remember healing my dog up as quick as possible so she didn't see them(she thinks she is tough sh*t) and getting over this little hill  so my dog was out of their vision. I though for sure they were coming in on us! My heart was racing and I had extra shells ready but once I looked back over the hill we retreated to they were gone as just as quick as they appeared. I had never seen a big dog cover ground like those two animals did. Come to find out people have been spotting them left and right in Whitman County now. The larger one of the two was Black. Funny now my buddies believe my story! Lol

That track is pretty small for a wolf. I'd guess coyote.

a bic lighter is 3 1/4" long   I'd guess the track to be 4" or just under. Not a coyote!

It has to be a coyotes until it is caught killing livestock a few times, then it might turn into a cougar or? Anything except a wolf.

Not a coyote track. Doesn't even resemble a coyote track.

:yeah: :IBCOOL:  That is the joke around Colville, wolves have to kill livestock before WDFW can find them!  :chuckle:
