I think you would likely have to make the springs.

To tell he truth though I can't imagine why anyone would buy or build one of the things with the traps we have now. To me they are obsolete.
Too heavy,
Too bulky,
Too hard to set
and they do a lot of fur damage.

well what do you recommend for beavers??? im new and realizing that we can only use live traps i thought these would be good for beaver

hancock traps shine when used as a drowning set but you better know what your doing to make sure it flops over in the water properly

Well, They are a good trap in that they will catch beaver.
I think a better combo is some type of swim through type trap for blind sets and a beefy single door for scent sets.
Other option is a heavy duty swim through that is stout enough to hold up to be set on land so you can use it for scent sets as well as blind sets.
Material wise that runs about $40/trap. I know the cost because I made some this fall.

I would mind some hancock traps for trapping the rivers,  no hut in sight or anywhere to put a swim through when they come up the bank in random places to eat.  Can bait and set on a slide where they're working the banks


chain the hancocks to the shore and place them so they flop over in the river and get sucked down until they hit the end of the chain

Problem you will have is getting the right materials. I looked long and hard for a source for that wire.

What part of the beaver had damage to the fur? I've caught dozens in my Hancock and have never had an issue. Also, never used it as a drown set. The swim throughs are slick though!! Quick sets, produce well.

I have put up a number from other trappers and the middle of the back is commonly rubbed.
Never owned one myself so I can not say what can be done to avoid it but just know I have seen a lot of it.

Sure, you can use drown traps. They just have to be cage traps.

Not sure why I haven't thought about that. I have to build one now just for fun. Make a neat little novelty item.

Sure, you can use drown traps. They just have to be cage traps.

I should add it is quite an advantage to use a drowning set with your cage trap as it extends the check time to 72 hours.

It's not a full frame. There are five squares, two with doors, one with the trigger and two at the point where the ends of the door sits when open.
Easier to explain if you have one in hand.
I would use 1x1 wire instead of 1x2 wire now.

Ive got a welder, Might consider building a few if I can figure out the triggering mechanism for the doors. Id have to have one in hand like you said and I should be able to copy it, Where do you find parts for those?

Springs and dogs I get from Minnesota Trapline Supply but any Trapper supply has them. The rest I make.

I've never had any fur damage in any of my traps.

I to have bruces style traps and love them and have had zero fur damage. Very cost effective if built yourself.

Just was reading this and had a picture of one in a Hancock. By the time my buddy got to his shop the beaver rubbed a spot. The hide was fine at first but he couldn't dispatched until he got back the the shop. I never had one rub but I can see it happening.

Swim throughs from Bruce and Jesse are the way to go and like said I've had no fur damage at all !!! They are light weight and fast to set and you can use them on land as a blind set in a trail I personally will never spend the money on a Hancock style trap just too heavy,bulky for me. The only thing I'm changing on my swim through cages is I'm going to at least a 14 gauge wire mesh my

It was nice until I got him out of the truck and took a closer look. Wanting to do more stuff with swim thrus because of this
