Well, my chocolate lab "Cruz" arrived last night from Wisconsin. He rolled out of the truck happy as can be and full of energy. When it was bed time he quietly played with his toys and then fell asleep. He let out a little whimper at about 3:45 and I took him outside to do his business. Then he fell back to sleep until 6am when I got up for work. Again, he went outside and did his thing, NO MESSES IN THE CRATE!

Here is the best picture of the little guy. This was the only time he stopped for two seconds. I've attached a link to his pedigree also incase any of you guys are into that sort of thing.

Hey Happy, I thought you might find his pedigree interesting. I did know that Carbon is from the Wet side of the state (Woodinville I believe is where his owners are) and has produced some fantastic dogs (Chopper and Emmitt NFC's) Chopper also being a top producing dog in the last 6-7 years. Emmitt is still a question mark as a producer. I have always wanted a dog from the Carbon line, but my wife has a love for Chocolate labs. So this worked out great.

His sire may not have been an FC or AFC, but he does have 6 or so full siblings who are. He also has 60+ MH passes and is QAA in limited trials that he ran as a 2 year old.

We'll see what I have in the next 6-12 months or so, but hopefully I can bring a little Carbon and Chocolate together to have a good Derby and or AA dog. If not i'll switch over to Hunt tests. I started another Thread over on RTF before I got him and it has some other info on his sire siblings.

Carbon was Franks dog. Mark Madore was breeder on record for the sire. Mark used to be Jim Gonia's assistant. He left and started his own business training dogs in Texas. He starts a lot of young dogs which get turned out to AA trainers once they are ready for AA stakes. Emmitt is Cynthia Tallman's dog. There are quite a few Emmitt pups of age now. I don't know of the bitch line / breeders dogs well.

The bitches sire is out of Tiger Mcbunn who was out of a great breeding between Maxx x NAFC Hattie. That breeding produced 4 other FC AFC's. Tiger produced 8 FC or AFC and many more with AA points.

Her Dam is primarily out of MH's who are out of FC's. Nothing too spectacular until you get back there a ways with Maxx and other FC/AFC NFC's etc.

Cruz's dam only has one eye due to a bad batch of vaccines she received as a puppy. Trust me I checked the paper work from the vaccine company who payed for all expenses and surguries and admitted fault. I guess there were a lot of puppies that received that bad batch back in 2011 in Wisconsin.

She will be running for her MH this year.

They are two relatively unknowns who started off FT dogs and were washed out for hunting homes. One is at Buckos one in Yakima but, I haven't gotten in touch with the owner in Yakima yet. They were directly from Carbon not two or three removed.

Is it common to use males that are 9-10 years old for breeding, or doesn't it matte?

Yes it is. If the dog is good enough it will produce litters well after it has passed. Many dogs from the past 15-20 years and at least 1 Fc Afc from the 80's is still producing a few litters a year with his frozen semen.

Yes but frozen semen from a dog in his prime can be quite different from a geriatric one. Not saying the above mentioned dog is a geriatric.

Our dog Loki has half siblings still being conceived and she was born over ten years ago.

PointNlab, you may be hearing good stuff about Bond from me over on RTF

so far he has more retrieve drive than any puppy I've had and he picked up the sit command the first time out. Walking on a lead is proving to be his least favorite. I'm going through Bill Hillman's puppy program. We'll see what direction I go with his formal training. I'll be looking forward to running some tests with you and your McBunn pup.

I'm a die hard Hillman fan! My first lab was from Cosmo lines and I would give anything to have used that approach on him. Nothing better than running a hard charging fire breather that knows how to sit. If you get to the dry side give me a buzz and we can train.

My 10 year old setter sired a litter of 9,3 years ago,I've known several dogs 14 years old that sired very large litters of more than 12.The frozen deal is that the quality of the spunk to be frozen holds up to the deep freeze and subsequent rethaw.I froze some from my male at 8 years old,He threw 1.3 billion swimmers which looked perfect under the scope pre freeze,post thaw not so good,a bunch of them didn't survive,what should have yeilded 8 breedings netted me 3.The very same day a freind collected a 3 year old gordon setter,he threw 1.2 billion and their outcome was 8 breeding pellets.

Sounds good Doug. Let me know if you'll be making it to any of the Oregon tests, especially on Sauvie Island. I live about 30 minutes from there and train their on the weekends.

Congrats! Labs are so loyal and friendly for the whole family. They are really bouncy for the first few years as puppies though

Hes getting big. can't believe it's only been 3 weeks. Training is going well using Hillmann. Tons of drive still and is sitting very nicely. Walking on a lead is also very easy, he isn't a fighter. He does however like to play keep away, I have to literally run the other way to get him to "chase" me so that i can grab his rope. It's a lot of fun. Also, you can see why we named him "Cruz". He has a white "cross" on his chest. Cruz is spanish for cross. He also has a couple of white toes on his back paws. This way i'll be able to tell him apart from all the other chocolates out there.

Gotta love seeing them do what they are bred for. Cruz gets introduced to a live chukar today. He was smelling the box last night and went ape $h!t. Should be a good time. I'm setting up the GoPro and hopefully get it all on video.

I am thinking of breeding my blf to a FC/AFC this year. She is by a FC/AFC and out of a MH. I will have both blacks and chocolates in the litter (if I decide to do it). Will be great gun dogs. My female is the coolest dog ever. In fact, she is the new "Lodge Dog" where I work here in Vancouver because of her temperament around people and mellow nature. But get her in the field and around birds and she is a different animal.
