Think I am loosing my mojo
« on: January 24, 2015, 05:16:12 PM »
So when I first got into coyote hunting I was 16 and hit it hard, between the ages of 16 and 19 I averaged one coyote called in out of every 2 sets (took me a while to connect on one though). Since then I dont get out much but it is to areas that I know hold lots of yotes. I called in 1 last year that my step-son connected on but thats been it for 3 years. In the last 3 to 4 years I have averaged about 1 coyote called in for every 10-20 sets. I have changed it up in calling style, tried howls, distress calls, a combination, have added a furry motion decoy to the set and a montana coyote decoy depending on the situation. I dont get many sets done in 1 day due to having to cover tough ground in between. Did 4 sets on thursday. Areas that are mostly private, and are nearly virgin to calling. Since I have to cover so much ground in between sets I hold out and make my sessions pretty long and sit for a while after i let it go silent, average an hour or so per set. i didnt see a single dog all day. Maybe it was beginners luck for a few years untill I started connecting on the dogs I called in. What is everyone elses average on how many sets you go without anything per coyote called in?

Probably not.
You are just not getting out as often as you used to and just not taking down as many yotes.  You had days before where you got skunked I'm sure.
Unless you are able to hunt large expanses of property and there's not many of those in the Woodland area , someone on adjacent property may be educating the yotes.
Spent most of my $$ on huntin, fishin & retrievin dogs, the rest I just pretty much wasted.

I average 1 in 5 at the moment, but like you, I have slowed down on dog hunting.  Been focusing mostly on waterfowl.

Back in the late 70's and 80's the only dogs that got shot at were those crossing or close to a road. No one called coyotes! Now people go to Wal-Mart and buy a call and now there a predator Hunter! :yike:  Dogs have herd every sound that sounds good and bad. They are well educated and pushed hard. I don't think it's you but more the popularity of the sport.

It's getting crazy out there anymore. Lots of people trying to hunt coyotes. These dogs have heard it all. Any more I treat it like public land turkey hunting. Less is more. I stay on stand much longer and much of it silent. One trick I been playing with is walk in with a friend. Do a stand then one of us leaves and the other sits quietly for 20 more min or more.  Has worked a few times.  Like you I haven't been hitting the dogs much, cats are my main target these days
https://www.howlforwildlife.org/take_action  It takes 10 seconds and it’s free. To easy to make an excuse not to make your voice heard!!!!!!

The commission shall attempt to maximize the public recreational game fishing and hunting opportunities of all citizens, including juvenile, disabled, and senior citizens.
