Another archery Blacktail bites the snow (Video)
« on: December 26, 2008, 06:38:23 PM »
Well I called around yesterday tried to get Coon Dog out on a deer but he had to work, we all know how that goes.  So I called up another buddy, made him sign in blood to never hunt my spot without me, and the way we went.  Snow was deep today, went up over the waist a couple times in some blowdowns.  Not ideal snow either, it was very loud and crunchy, which makes for tough spot and stock hunting.  Needless to say we still found one, I was back about 20yards filming my buddy Tony when he jumped a buck out of his bed, I quickly made my way up to him to get in place for the shot.  Tony got settled in and made the shot, he hit a little far back but it worked, two more arrows and the buck went to sleep, pretty easy blood trail to follow to say the least.  Buck was a 3x3 with little crab claws up front.  Ill post pics in a bit.  Enjoy the Video.  BEARHUNTER

I would like to start off by saying good job on the footage and on getting the deer down. I also would like to say that it took 2 to many shots especially for being that close on all 3 of those shots. I do think it need a second but not a 3rd what can say tho you did get it. Congrats on the filming.

Just to clarify for you guys my friends first shot was good elevation and to far to the right.  Second shot was 37yards and he hit it in the neck, which can be quick and fatal or a slow death, so I say the third shot was definetly inorder which was finally put behind the shoulder.  One thing I would like to say is that there are a lot of archery hunters out there that do not put the time and practice in behind the bow like a lot of use do.  *censored*ty shots shouldnt happen but fact of the matter is they do.  I showed it like it was, do you guys think that if this hunt makes my video someday that there should be some fancy editing involved our show it like it was?  I dont know the right answer, no one likes to see an animal suffer and truth to the matter even if I have made a good shot, if a second one is an option Ill take it and try and put the animal down even faster.  No one is perfect, but we should STRIVE TO BE....

Nicely done! I didnt see anything wrong with the way that buck was taken. If an animal is standing and you are within a reasonable range I let er fly.  Two 1" holes always are better than one.  It could have been an hour or more if that was a paunch/liver shot therefore putting another arrow in the buck is more humane.

I never have to put 2 arrows into an animal because my 1st arrow is always a perfect heart shot.  YEAH RIGHT!   GOOD JOB guys.

if I have made a good shot, if a second one is an option Ill take it and try and put the animal down even faster.  No one is perfect, but we should STRIVE TO BE....

You summed it up well here.  Always - ALWAYS - get another shot if possible.  If you've already drawn blood, then you should take any additional shots possible to dispatch that animal as quickly as possible.

As for your video, it's really up to you and how you want to set the context for this hunt.  Many people may take offense to the poor hit of the first shot, but your prompting the shooter to quickly get another shot was "real" at it was the right thing to do.  He choked and made another poor hit, but again, the quick follow up and putting a final well-placed arrow into that deer, completed the hunt.  I didn't time the sequence from first hit to deer down but it was pretty quick given there were three separate shots taken.

Having filmed a lot, I can tell you that an audience will react more to how you set up the hunt.  If you go into it with loud music and a "tough guy" attitude, you will turn a lot of people away.  If you go into it with an educational bent, you will win over would-be critics.  For example, if you lead into this hunt with: "....sometimes things don't go as planned.  The hunters first arrow was a bit futher back than he wanted so he quickly positioned for a follow up shot.  That shot was off as well so we moved down for a better view.  We spotted the buck broadside.  A final double-lung shot quickly put the deer down.  We believe it is important to read each situation and react accordingly.  In this case, we felt our position above the deer provided an opportunity to get another arrow into the deer.  Some may choose to back out and come back in 8 hours...blah, blah, blah..."

I think too many videos are taking a "loud-mouth" approach, which in my opinion, is in poor taste.  People like to see real hunts as they happen on public land.  Care must be taken to edit a raw as-it-happened hunt without cussing, disrespect to the animal, etc.

Hope this feedback is taken as honest and helpful.  That's my intent.

Another key point -  I always recommend waiting 6-8 hours on gut-shots.  I personally may have backed out but given the deer ran below and this was late season where they tend not to run (to conserve energy) as much, I may have crept forward as you guys did.  It's hard to judge a situation by watch a video so this is why I'd recommend setting up the hunt with the narration.  Just my  :twocents:

I timed the sequence and it was 1 min 30 seconds from the first shot to the deer falling over.  That's pretty reasonable.  I found it remarkable that this buck allowed you guys to walk up on him like you did.  That crunchy snow was LOUD  :bash:

Bow4elk, thats the exact feedback I was looking for.  First shot was a pounch shot, the buck went about 80 yards and bowed up in the trees, he was bleeding heavily all the way down and we could tell he was sick.  I actually had the camera rolling the hole time from beginning to end.  So some of the scene is missing so the youtube video wouldnt be to long.  Id say probably 2 to 2.5 minutes from first shot to time of death.  The reason I asked this guestion is because I recieved a PM from a site member and we discussed some important facts, and I just wanted to here everyone elses opinions.  Pre and Post editing is a must for a video like this one, but it portrays actual real situations that a hunter can encounter, and the different approachs one may take to dispatch the animal.  Thanks for the inputs!

You're welcome.  As long as you keep "tasteful" in the forefront of your editing mind, you should have no major issues with this.  Good luck!

HERE IS ONE FOR YOU GUYS . in eastmans bowhunting journal, issue28 march-april 2005. cameron hanes shoots a nice whitetail. i cant remember the video but the magazine only talkes about one shot. LOOK IN THE QUIVER AND YOU WILL SEE 3 BLOODY ARROWS,page 22 and 24. it doesnt always end in a one shot one kill. some just dont admit it. way to stick with it and finish the job. J
