Idaho Elk Hunting Help
« on: December 27, 2008, 10:21:38 AM »
We are considering hunting elk in Idaho in the next year or two. We are looking at the Elk City or Dwarshak zones.  Has anybody hunted either of these areas?  What is the terrain like and where in the state of WA would the terrain compare to?  We usually hunt the blues but are getting tired of chasing spikes around during general season and are looking for similar terrain where we can still see elk.  Thanks for any help and advice.

We hunted the elk city zone for years during the sept. rifle season we killed alot of bulls in our camp up until about 5 years ago.  The hunting in the area we were in has really declined we quite going in there, havent elk hunted there in 3 years now.  I did drive up there for the day from my parents house in kooskia in november for the day this year to deer hunt  and didnt see any elk tracks and only saw one small buck and a few does.  There are alot of wolves in the area now I dont know if that is the reason for lack of game but im sure it isnt helping.

if you are going to go you better get some tags now. A week ago there were some left but not many. Sorry I cant help you with the area but I can say GO. You wont kill one if you stay at home and wonder.

My dad and his group went two years ago. I couldn't go because of work. They packed in on horses and mules. In 5 days they never saw an elk.  :( :twocents:

I would hunt unit 10, its remote and you need mules for sure, nothing in this state compares to the terrain over there, but its a adventure! and still some elk around

Another thing about that country is it is pretty brushy too. Not quite coast brushy but lots of underbrush and the wolves aren't helping either now. nwhunter

Have you checked to see if there are any tags for the Moscow, or Genesee area ?  I forget what unit they are, but there are elk in there.

Those would be units 8 and 8A. I grew up over there and my family still farms the area north of Lewiston. Most of the elk will be in the 8A unit or the north and eastern edge of 8. Not a ton of elk in there but I don't think the wolves are in there yet.

The wolves are thick in unit 6 where it borders 8A and 10A. I have hunted there for four years and we pulled elk out every year. This year one person in a neighboring party got a 6x5 (small guy dispite the points on his antlers). We have gone from several elk seen a day to a few on a hunting trip. They run and stay in dark timber. I saw my first wolf this year. I don't know if it is worth going back. With wolves, the days of easy hunting are over.
