Alaskan adventure info please!
« on: January 29, 2015, 07:46:43 PM »
So here's the scenario, as part of my graduation present me and my father are spending 2 weeks up in alaska. I was wondering if it would be worth buying a black bear tag in case I were to see one (or what are my chances of getting one). We are primarily going to be fishing, but I would love to shoot a bear while I'm at it! Also what are some smaller clear Rivers I should fish, I'm not into the whole kenai combat fishing, I would rather spend my time casting spinners and drifting eggs for willing coho!

What part of AK will you be in? It's a big state.

The further from Anchorage you get, the more I would recommend getting a bear tag.  I am not a huge fisherman but if you are out at "day break" or "dusk" which may be nonexistent depending on when you come up.. you will likely see bears on a fishy river.

I'll be up around July! And I'm wanting to fish around the Russian and rivers like it! So it sounds like I would have a pretty good chance at one? And any other recommendations on rivers while I'm up there?

Try the nushagak. Been twice, good runs both times. Can't drive to it though.

If ya go down to Homer, stop at clam gulch on the way and dig some razor clams.  When I was up there 5 years ago the limit was 60 a person.  We bought a spade shovel but also dug them with our hands.  I think the limit might me lower now.

There's Black Bear on the Kenai. Quite a few at the Russian river which is a popular fishing spot for reds at the time you'll be up there. You'll have to do a little hiking to get away from people to hunt most likely. The pelts won't be worth a damn that time of year though. As far as uncrowded walk in fishing good luck, combat fishing isn't as bad as it seems and can be quiet if you fish in the twilight hours. Not much around Anchorage for coho until August so your best bet is to go sockeye fishing. Any questions feel free to ask me I was born and raised up there for 24 years and fished for salmon religiously all over in the summer.

Take a trip over to wasilla, July is great on the little souix for kings and there's a few bears. Personally I would wait till the middle of August and hit the silver run up, way more fish and they are fighters. Good luck
