Bugling
« on: January 31, 2015, 01:04:06 PM »
Hello, I am a scout leader in the Tri-Cities area and was planning on taking my scouts bugling this September. This was always one of my favorite campouts as a boy. I am originally from Idaho, and have been living here for 1 yr. I was thinking of going over to the blues or west near the Cascades. Can someone give me some direction of which place they would vocalize more? I heard there are wolves in the blues, experience tells me elk with wolf pressure do not talk much.

Thanks,

MT

Try GMU 346 at Ravens Roost the 2nd weekend of Sept. There is a big flat spot just down from the trailhead to camp at. Should get alot of action bugling after 10pm.

Brought my boys up to haney meadows on blewitt pass last year and they were bugling right down at the meadows. We were bugling at them from camp. May have some hunters there but don't let that stop you.

As a general rule of thumb this is fround apon as it educates elk to calling. but I think in your senario for the kids it's a great experience. I remember when I heard my first bugle and that moment alone started  my elk obsession.  sept is just a magical time, can't wait to enjoy it with my son.

From what I've seen in September in the elk woods, you don't have to do much calling to hear elk bugle at night if you're in the right places. I wouldn't worry too much about calling.

" In today's instant gratification society, more and more pressure revolves around success and the measurement of one's prowess as a hunter by inches on a score chart or field photos produced on social media. Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield

I'd go on about the 27th this year. Archery season ends on the 24th so they will have 3 days to calm down and will be talking more for you.
Bring a GPS!  It's awkward to have to eat your buddies!
