Mounting a scope and using laser bore sighter
« on: December 27, 2008, 03:26:10 PM »
Hi guys,
I mounted a Leupold VXIII 3.5x9-40 on my Knight KP1 .308.  When I look down on the top of the rifle it seems the scope is leaning towards the right???  I used knight rings and bases for the scope mount.  I laser bore sighted and first the rifle was off the right after some adjustments I got it dead on, but I have not fired the rifle yet, haven’t had time to do so.
Questions:
Is it normal for the scope to be off, looking down on the rifle at the top of the scope it is not straight with the barrel. "Why??"  :dunno:

When laser bore sighting a rifle indoors should it be on the dot??  Someone told me the crosshairs should be 2" above the laser dot. "True??"  :dunno:

That is weird I had a friend laser sight my  rifle and it's not quite right either. I did better doing it the old fashioned way.

My scope is dead straight and it was bore sighted, I didn't do it though. I don't think it really matters where you put the crosshairs on the dot. As long as you can get it on paper you're good :twocents:

measure center of bore to center of scope, at close distance say 10'-20' laser dot would be that far below cross hairs. For typical med. mounted scopes thats around 1.5". I have gotten real close with laser dots. One thing I do is, I usually zoom in and out with the power to make sure there is no shift in windage, another thing is a good setup you should be close to the windage zero with your scope adjustments if not your scope or mounts and bore are off center with each other. I'm not familiar with the mounts your using but are the rings in alinment with each other are there windage adjustments on the rear mounted ring?

Cully,
No adjustments can be made on my rings, the rings are weaver style rings.

Well if the scope is really not in alignment with the barrel and totally parallel you will never achieve mechanical zero. The gun will never be even close to accurate except at the yardage you sight in at. Elevation can be adjusted to a degree, but more than a couple clicks either way of windage adjustments and you have problems. You could try a 2 piece mounting system like the leupold with windage adjustments or have a gunsmith build shims but I would send the gun back to the manufacture as this doesn't sound like it's within spec. Do you have a pic you can post?

Let me clarify, that is a couple of clicks either way from a mechanically zeroed scope.
