Best montana archery elk permit?
« on: March 02, 2015, 08:31:50 AM »
If you guys could only draw one archery elk permit, what would it be? The reason I ask is old man and I are building points and since they don't do ghost points, we have to put in for a hunt. We don't plan on hunting there this year but if we somehow drew a tag, we would make it happen.

Should add that we currently have 2 points but we are looking for low draw odds. Last few times we have put in, I just picked the lowest draw odds possible but this year, might as well put in for a unit that if for some crazy chance we draw, we can go into it with high excitement.

The buffer tag is one of the harder ones to draw. Just outside the park. Can't remember how many they give out and if a non-res can draw or not though... If you've applied the last couple years you should have received their annual non-resident pamphlet a week or two ago and they have a break down of all the draw only hunts for elk and deer and they break down the draw odds for each hunt. Its pretty easy to see which hunts are the toughest to draw. Most are under >1% draw odds. (You wont draw with 2 points  :chuckle:) If you are only looking to continue building points you can put in for one of the units with only 1 or 2 non-res tags available. I believe 10% of tags are set aside for non-res so it has to be a unit that is giving away at least 10 tags. Good luck! I'll be entering the draw with 2 points this year too for deer and elk.

Yep I got that and know which one I would apply for strictly if going for lowest odds but just curious what guys would put in for if they had lots of points. The rationale behind that is for the very off chance we drew, the unit would come with recommendations and not just lowest draw odds.
