DIY Bear Rug Difficulty
« on: February 24, 2015, 03:43:46 PM »
I'm planning my first bear hunt for the fall; that is unless I get lucky with a Spring draw. I'd like to take this thing from start to finish myself. Has anyone done their own bear rug? How hard was it? I'm not looking for museum quality here. I just want something to look back on and think "that's all mine."

Am I crazy or should I just take it to a professional?

You can do it.  One of the guys I hunt with messed up at the skinning part, so even the professionals couldn't help.  The tanning part can be a bit of a chore when it comes to time--getting all fleshed/split/turned.  Probably want extra of the different formulas/chemicals for tanning than what the bottle says.  Unless you brain tan.

You could have it sent to the tannery by the taxidermist.  And then sew the rug yourself.  But I imagine some special tools may be required.  You'd need a form for the head and a tounge and eyes.  Not sure on the teeth I think they're fake too.  I'd have it done by a pro.  I think they just sew felt for the bottom?  Maybe a pad between the tanned hide and the felt.  You tube might help.  Good luck!

 Start with this link

I do about 15-20 bear rugs every year and some are skinned very well and others are not,  I would say 75-80% are skinned improperly.
Get a video or youtube  how to cape turn and flesh and I highly recommend the use of a commercial tannery. A commercial tannery will properly de-grease your bear and tumble it and you will ultimately be allot happier with the finished product.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions
