Noisy bow
« on: December 28, 2008, 02:15:38 PM »
Looking for info on how to quite down my bow. When I draw it back, it makes a creaking noise. I bought some graphite and put it on the cams, but didn't have any luck. Am I using the right lubricant? What about placement? Also, it's an older bow. Do the cables need to be replaced? Thanks

Might try putting some where the limbs meet the riser, (pivot point) I had one creek every now and then, I just sprayed a tiny bit of 3 in one oil and it went away !!  :dunno:

I am no expert but I would not lube my bow myself. As far as I know I would take it to a proshop and have them look at it. I believe it is recommended to replace your string every year, but I believe as long as you keep your string waxed and you don't shoot it as much as some guys you can probably go longer with it than a year. If you shoot it a lot I would get a new string.

Is it coming from the cable slide?  Try spitting on it and manually moving it back and forth. Than draw the bow back and see if it is still there.  If that is your problem.  You can buy a teflon one that should be quiter.

What bow do you have? I know that the Mathews newer bows that have QCC'S tend to make a popping sound when drawn.

It's an older Martin Cougar Speed Flight.

Possibly uneven tension where your cables attach to your limbs.  When you draw it back look at the upper and lower cams use the string to see if your cams look vertically straight.  If they are twisted you might have a tech add some twists to your cable ends to pull it straight.  Had the same problem a few years ago.

Mine sounded like a gun going off...

I had a Martin Pride split limb

What I did to fix the problem was to put two sets of Limb Savers on each end, two sets of wiskers into the strings and cables (wiskers worked the best and lasted the longest compared to other string dampeners)

Picked up a top of the line counter balance dampener (the one that pokes out the front of the bow in front of your hand)

Lastly, went to a drop rest

All of these things made the bow almost completely silent...

Thanks very much for your input. I'm gonna have to take her into the shop. Maybe it's time for a new one.
