Drying pelts in the rain
« on: February 11, 2015, 09:46:01 AM »
I got a coyote tail that just doesn't seem to wanna dry, Its three weeks old been salted for two of those weeks, borax for the rest. It's not slipping at all, it's showing no signs of rot or anything, it's just not drying, I got it pinned to a piece of cardboard in my outdoor deck closet(apartment). What the heck is going on? I have it airing out know(no borax or salt).

run a fan and have the air blow across it.  That will help some.

How much fat on it? It won't dry if it has a lot of fat and doesn't get fleshed.

Your relative moisture  in the air around your  project is what? 85%? Don't expect a whole  lot of drying until you get a lower % humidity, or move it to one...

Yeah that humidity level is what I'm thinking, there isn't a lot of fat on it, I did flesh it, but I'm thinking iceman is dead on, the fur around the leather actually is wet when I check on it, I wanna bring it inside but the girlfriend doesn't like that idea much, it's just a tail!! :dunno:
