Pheasant Dinner

We had some friends over this weekend and Mom wanted to cook a country dinner, we went out and killed a few birds.  I have not been hunting because I feel bad for them in the current conditions.  There are hundreds of them in along the brush and trees on our creek.  Took us a few minutes to kill these.  I was amazed at how much the breasts have shrunk the last two weeks - they must be really hurting.

Good looking birds and awesome looking dogs. Good dogs and good times are to go hand in hand. It would be great to have hunting like that even an hour or so from home but to have it out your door would really be something.

It is actually my parents' place and their dogs.  They are pretty good pups and live a pretty tough life on the farm .  There is nothing better than watching them work -  I am always amazed at how much passion they have for it.  The big chocolate has a great nose and the yellow loves to run.  They make a pretty good team.

Man that is like the best of all worlds . Someone else pays taxes and feeds the dogs. Don't tell me they loaned you the gun and bought the ammo too . What an awesome deal. Take good care of your folks and be sure to let your mom know that you will bring dinner next time as well. What a special time.

Just a thought, but if you want to keep the population up and are worried about the winter kill, the best thing you can do is get out there & kill roosters. 

In SD we figured out that the roosters push hens off of feed in bad weather.  Winter 1 hens die off.  Spring = limited hatch.  Takes 3 or 4 years at best to get the population back up.  You just about can't hurt the population by killing roosters.
