Got some work in.
« on: February 12, 2015, 08:05:11 AM »
My 6 month old brit pup continues to come along.  She's holding her points better and she's handeling well enough to come off the check cord.  She figuring out her nose and continues to build her confidence and her range.  It's been fun to see the similarity and the differences between her and her mom.  Her mom was independent as hell at this stage, and when you let her go you needed a 4-wheeler to get her back.    This pup isn't as independent, and likes to go with you more.  But she shows the same drive and it seems she trusts her nose more......  Now that I've shot over her and taken her off the check chord, it's time to break out the barrel and start getting her used to it.

Thanks guys.

She had her first real hunt yesterday, although it was a released bird hunt.  She did nail one wild covey though.   I'm really happy with the way she's using her nose.  She is really starting to trust it more and more.   Most puppy's at this point are trying to creep up as close as they can to the birds to get a look, but this pup is legitimately pointing them from a pretty good distance and trusting her nose.   Shes not pressuring the birds at all until I get close enough for a flush.  She's checking the scent as well, which really suprises me for a pup this young.  When she locks up, you know there's going to be a bird, and not just feathers or a hawk kill.  That will really help in trials, hopefully keeping her from having many non-productives.  Since I was shooting, I didn't get any video yesterday, but here's a couple pictures.  I had 10 birds released, and she found 20-30.
