Lots of Adventures on Decatur Island
« on: February 12, 2015, 02:59:31 PM »
Just before lunch I got a call from my son at school....

Can I bring a net and box to the school since there is a Bald Eagle hopping around on the playground?  I grabbed my welding gloves and the two other items.  By the time I got to the school, the Eagle had hopped across the street.

When approaching it, we saw that it had a broken wing.  Not sure how it happened but the Eagles have been doing some of their tumbling mating dances and maybe one didn't come out of it quickly enough.

So we caught it and I brought it over to Lopez Is. in order for it to make its way to Wolf Hollow rehab center.

My son took a phone video of the capture.  I wish I had grabbed a better camera.

Looks like you're taking its temperature and it didn't exactly like it.

Here's how he was transported.   :chuckle:

Good work Loki! That bird looks in pretty good shape, hopefully they can repair that wing.
If not it would make a good educational, hands-on display for kids. Just because a bird can't fly doesn't mean they have to go to waste. I've seen multiple large raptors that couldn't fly, but still were on display, or being used for educational purposes.

Yeah, hopefully it will be fine.  He looks pretty healthy, besides the wing anyways.  A few years back, we got a call about an eagle with a broken wing.  Upon responding, and catching it, we discovered it was also blind in one eye (an old injury).  This might have been the reason that upon x-raying the wing, they discovered three other healed breaks.

They ended up putting it down which really POed us as we felt somebody would have been happy to have had that bird.  That was was a fighter surviving three broken wings, or a wing broken in three places.
