prime seafood to quit supplying wild steelhead
« on: December 28, 2008, 09:00:42 PM »
prime seafood will no longer supply wild steelhead to any of their customers. all of the wild steelhead they provide to restaurants come from the quinault river. here's a few links with the whole story for anybody who's interested.
this is where the sh1t hit the fan first...

good news... a start anyway.

" In today's instant gratification society, more and more pressure revolves around success and the measurement of one's prowess as a hunter by inches on a score chart or field photos produced on social media. Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield

Its a good start.
What gets me is the "Fresh" part. You call 12 hrs in a gill net with blood in rigemortise Fresh? Please. I see them when there cleaned at the fish house once in a while.

And they only mention the lower Q? What a joke. The QIN nets the Halis 6 days a week thru April. What a joke...

Over the last 6 or so years its hard to catch Steelies in numbers of years past even in the lower Q. Im not talking Cook fish. I fish it regularly and its no better than some of the other West End rivers anymore. In fact, I can put more fish to the hand on the Hoh just about anyday.

I see Todd R really got in on the action too.

I do what the voices in my tackle box tell me to.

Theres a thread about the same thing basically with elk on another post.

Is there an active campaign against grocery stores and restaurants that sell wild steelhead?

If not there should be something.  Even a simple letter explaining that wild steelhead arent a wise eco-friendly fish to sell etc.  Perhaps a letter can be worked up to start mailing out to businesses etc if no one else is doing it yet.

Its bad that the resources are being misused and basically raped while we taxpayers run their netting and hunting operations that are illegal for the general public.  Not to mention the ethical standpoint of it.

Any one have an idea for a website name for this?   maybe combine the elk hunting the natives do with the steelhead, or the orca whale hunts too?

The PP BB had a campaign a couple years ago. Not sure how much they push it now.

Holy smokes what a mess.

I live down here but haven't paid much attention to the steelhead issue, I don't fish steelhead (yes I kno, not an excuse).... I know on the stilli the fishing is "elbows to *censored*s" for sportsmen, really doesn't seem like much fun.  I don't think it matters much to the fish, who is killing them.... the fact is they are being managed to extinction.  This is good news that at least a few people are taking notice and choosing not to buy/serve these fish.

This from someone who thinks farmed fish taste like crap  :P

Great response to a little comment. Wow, the power of the Internet. Todd makes a great product and has supported events at Phish's web site(In links) and he knows a thing or two about Steelhead.  I Really need to go fishing, time to dig out the gear!
Take a kid hunting or fishing, Pass it on, it's not yours to keep!
