Pasayten backcountry hunt.
« on: February 14, 2015, 11:19:04 AM »
Have any of you spent any time in the pasayten wilderness area? Myself and some buddies from work are planning on doing the high buck hunt this year. In the planning stage and will be taking a few scouting trips this summer. Any pics of your trophies or just the scenery would be awesome!
Thanks!!!

I've never shot anything in the paseyten but I've had fun trying.
I'll try to post my pics. You can also use the search bar on the site here and you'll find a lot of information on the area.

Here's your GPS coordinates I would hunt if I had a young group of guys to hunt with.

Never been there but always have thought it would have some nice bucks, go check it out and let us all know how you do.  :hello:

If you hunt on or near a trail even 5-10 miles or more in expect company. My advice is get off the trails and get to an area you would think no one would be then go another mile or 2. I tried to warn a buddy that went in last year he went 4-6 miles then took an unmaintained trail another 2 miles and there were still 2 camps in the basin he thought he would have all to himself.

People might be more willing to give advice if post something on this thread too.  :chuckle:

I do believe the GPS coordinates I posted will take care of that issue.

My Pasayten camp from a few years ago.  In my opinion, unless you're looking down on goats during the high hunt, you're not high enough.  Lots of hunters working down in the basins - get up in the shale and scree to find the bucks. Be prepared to move camp frequently, and be ok with sleeping out on the mountain if you can't get back to camp if you've chased deer over hill and dale.

Harts pass area is always a good bet for the high hunt.

Maybe a good place to park, but it gets absolutely hammered during the high hunt.  There will be 20+ rigs worth of guys dayhunting out of the Slate Peak parking area, and another dozen or so rigs illegally hunting outside of the legal open areas. Avoid that zoo of you can, imho.

I shot my goat up beauty creek toward devils peak.   it was close to boone and crockett.  awesome country.  don't think goat can be hunted there anymore.   found a moose shed high on a ridge and saw wolf tracks.  this was in the 1970's.   mike w

That statement is absolutely verifiable!
