Pasayten backcountry hunt.

Got back last night, after being gone from home only 24 hours, from a planned 3day backpack hunt. When I got to the trailhead ready to head out, I discovered my camelback bladder had leaked about a liter of water out during the car ride up. Seemed my sleeping bag soaked up about 90% of that water and needless to say, it was soaked through and unusable. I ended up hiking in for the day, hoping to get lucky, and came home last night, after seeing three deer, all doe. Talk about a bummer of a trip. Oh well, the high buck hunt will have to wait until next year.... 

One reason I carry my sleeping bag in a Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Dry Sack.  Bummer.

Two mistakes. Camelback bladders suck.  But your biggest is that you didn't have your sleeping bag in a sea to summit like mentioned above.  I use the sea to summit event dri bags. Get a Platy...

I went completely away from bladders. They're sure handy but I've had about every brand leak and I just chose not to take chances. Sucks to have wet everything.

Screw the bladder.  Waste of weight.  Sea to summit is survival gear.  Must have if going hardcore survival.  IMO

Hmmm sounds like the same story some Dude told me that I met on the trail yesterday. Ha Ha. Seriously I gave them bags up a few yrs ago I  got tired of worrying about them leaking.

No more bladders for me either. I carry 2 Nalgene bottles. If not too far in I have a big plastic collapsible jug I like to fill with water at camp. It allows me to keep 2.5 gallons of water on hand. Folds down flat and weighs very little.

No bladders for me! One Nalgene in an outside pocket and sometimes I'll drop a 1/4 ounce and go with a 1liter pop bottle. One or maybe two 2liter plastic bottles collapsed. Very light and more durable than you'd expect. Proven sharps containers! Good trash bag around the sleeper. Doubles as a poncho if you need it.

I'm missing the high hunt this year.. Really missing it! Construction at home and work...

These days I try to carry most of my water in my stomach. I'll drink 100oz or so on the drive, chug a 32 oz gatorade before hitting the trail and only carry a Nalgene full of water in my pack. You have to be confident of your water sources where you are headed.

Also this system is not leak proof. If you drink this much water and are older than 40 you will find it still wants to leak out often.

   I don't know that I could hike more than a couple hundred yards before I would have get rid of most of that. That's borderline water poisoning. If I know I have water waiting for me, I run pretty lean with a couple nalgenes worth in my pack.

Well for me it is a long drive to the Pesayten...

I don't know if it really works this way medically, but normally if I drink all the water I need for the day in the first few hours of the day it's no different then spreading it out over the day. Unless you are really sweating for a long period of time, even then you go a ways before rehydrating if you pre-hydrated.

I have been carrying the same 100oz Camelback for the last 12 years and it still works perfect and has never leaked over hundreds of miles with lome pretty varied loads. I am a firm believer in continuous hydration vs. pre saturation. I have always ended up pissing a lot when hiking in general and when i drink a lot before hand I just piss more. Staying moderately hydrated over a long period is much more beneficial to me. I still throw in a Nalgene for refilling and for mixing flavored drinks.

Spent six days hiking around the central Pasayten during the high hunt.  Only ran into four hunters the whole time. Two of them on the 21st, hadn't seen a buck but did see one hunter with one down.  Didn't see another hunter until I ran into two on the 24th.  They had a nice 4x3 just taken that morning.   They hadn't seen another hunter.  Ran into a group fishing on the 25th and they had talked to a group on their way out that was packed in by an outfitter and their whole group got skunked.  The whole six days I didn't hear a shot either.  I saw a total of 5 does in six days.  Granted, I was just hiking and fishing, but I did bring my 'nocs and glassed just for fun.
