DIY Archery Targets
«
on:
February 17, 2015, 11:21:48 AM »
Curious if anyone on here has experience making their own archery target? I'd ideally like to keep it around $50 and be able to shoot broadheads into it. I have access to lots of cardboard, cotton material, as well as a couple different types of foam. Basically, I'm wondering what filling material folks have found works best for making a target that I can shoot broadheads into, as well as any tips with the method of constructing it. Thanks for any advice!

Now if you just wanted to build a field tip target that might be a little different.

I built a broadhead target and a field tip.. The broahead one is just 2" foam I had stacked with cardboard every other and some hard black packing foam material about 18-20" thick and works good but don't shoot it very often and doubt it will hold up very long but was free.. Field point target is cardboard edge out stacked and compressed with all thread and on old wagon wheels to move it around.. I am in this one under $10 and shoot it a lot.

DRock and DoubleJ, that was actually another question I meant to ask...am I just better off buying a target for broadheads, or can I make a better one myself for less $$$$? Thanks for the replies.

Use a differtn target for broad heads and feild tips each will last longer.
My home made BH target is a pice of 2'x8'x2" pink inuslation that i cut into 4 2x2 squares then duct tape together. I do the edges and then a t in yhe middle... use it just to tune broad heads.
DYI feild targets... Bag target by Ames Corp made in Tacoma area you can get a 3'x3' bag for about $20 line the front and back with a pice of carpet then fill it with any kind of plastic bags, tarps sheeting etc.
If you want a BIG one thenyou can make a layerd target. You cut carpet strips 12" wide by how ever long and stack. You need acess to a welder and a bunch of all thread. take come channel iron torch some holes for the carpet and start cranking down... Lasts a long time and works great for putting paper targets on. A company near shelton makes them and i belive coates them in some kind of bead liner material to make them last even longer Arrow Last is the name of the company. The same general principle can be had for corregated cardboard but you need to make the stripps a little wider.

In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

I really like Coops idea with the wagon wheels. I built this one to be used in the shop for indoor shooting. I welded a frame out of unistrut and used all thread at all four corners then cut a lot of cardboard to fill it in. Your size is up to you on this build? Works awesome for both tips. All materials I got FREE. But the welder is kinda spendy.......It is on wheels so it can be moved easily.

That style is the best diy target out there. When I get a large shop I'll have a few.

If you do a bag target for field tips, I would suggest allowing it to swing so some of the energy will go into moving it and penetration will not be as deep. I have stuffed a tyvek type chicken food bag with plastic grocery bags and not shot through it when it could move.
Three or four or five pieces of carpet hanging about 2-3 inches from each other might work as well but i would still have a good backstop.

I made a field point target. It's 4'X4" made out of 2X12. Made a door on top put synthetic woven material on front and back and crammed it full of blankets and clothes! (Which i got for free off craigslist) at 5 yards arrow wont penetrate more then 4-5 inches ( i shoot 2014 Faktor Turbo). I guess that would depend on how hard you compacted your stuffing. I would not shoot a broadhead into that tho... Go buy a Broadhead target for that. My fingers are worth the extra money..!
