Checked off Mount Hood!
« on: February 17, 2015, 02:13:41 PM »
Took advantage of this weather to get up Mount Hood yesterday.  Great day to be out!  We did the Palmer Glacier Route and went up "the old chute".  Temps in the 30's most of the time.  Ice fall was a real concern so we did a 3:30 am start from our camp at 9,200 feet.  We arrived right at sunrise.

We were all a little out of shape so we were slow.

We went from the parking lot at timberline (5,945) to our camp (9,200) in about 3.5 hours.  from there we made camp and crashed.

We were boots on trail at 3:50 and hit the summit at 7:10. so 3:20 min.  Total Time up was just under 7 hours.  down time was only like 2.5 hours, not including a short lunch break and time to take down our camp.

most folks were doing old chute which is the route we took.  I did not measure the pitch, but my guess is that it was 45 +/- 2 degrees.  some were saying it was 50, however I did 50 at Shasta last year and that was much steeper than this was.

The folks we talked to who did Pearly gates said it was steep and icy.  They were talking about 50 feet of clear water ice.  The bergschrund on the hogsback was closed.  I assume it will open up early given the low snow year so you may want to hit it ASAP.

My advice would be to get an alpine start and try to be on the summit as the sun rises.  Any later and you may be at risk for significant icefall.  We saw some big ice falls on the slopes to our east as it warmed up around 9 or 10 am.

good luck!

Who's the guy in the picture? Is that you or a climbing partner? He looks a LOT like a guy I know and have climbed with.

Awesome pics Rob! Makes me miss my old climbing days. The second pic is kick arse and I like the one with the shadow of the mountain off in the distance. Somewhere I have one I took on Rainier with the shadow going out for who knows how many miles.
Good story too.

Any big plans (climbing) on the schedule for this year that you care to divulge?

No firm plans.  Would like to knock off rainier so i can say it is done.  Then it is just fun climbs.  I really want to do el dorado.  There is talk of mount Olympus.  And I could do Baker over and over again!  I got robbed of a climb up shuksan and the Ruth-icy traverse last year due to scheduling issues so id like a do-over chance on those.  Would like to goto spider gap and look at day trips to do the nearby peaks too.

So many options!

What were your favorites?

Hard to pick a fav but a few I just ended up doing over and over. Did Rainier 7X by 5 routes. Liberty Ridge the most technically challenging but the Tahoma Glacier probably the most enjoyable, almost like a third world climb because it's so remote (at least it used to be). Did Adams a bunch, nothing technical except the North Ridge of the Lyman that had a few puckering moves. Olympus once just to say I did it. Always had a good time on Baker and Shuksan (Fisher Chimneys).
For rock, it's hard to beat Stuart, West Ridge and down the Cascadian Couloir. Tried the North Ridge once but it's a bowling alley if there are people ahead of you. For a short rock day trip, I did Ingalls Peak dozens of times, just love the scenery.
For an extended alpine experience, I liked the Ptarmigan Traverse. Talk about so many options! Your only limit on that is how much food you can carry.

Climb on!

I don't know why, but Rainier does not call to me.  I need to do it but somehow i think it will be one and done with Rainier.  Baker I could do over and over.

Ptarmigan traverse is on my list.  Sounds like a great trip

PT is more doable now that the Suiattle river road is open again. I haven't studied it lately to see how far the road is open but the exit for the PT used to be to come out on the Downey Creek drainage. I don't know what they were doing when the road was closed.

Rainer is a must do. I've always wanted to do Hood, haven't climbed in years.  Mt. Olympus is one of my favorites
