I was talking to a friend from high school and he said his son is a fire fighter in Alaska and all he does now is hunt and fish.  He showed me pictures of moose, grizzly and caribou he as taken.  He was drawn for a muskox this year but there is no snow so he is done...

What's a DM825 tag?

Never mind, I googled it.

Moose permit. :chuckle:

BIG bear on that island, good luck!  My good friend killed a bear on Wales about 10 years ago and it had a skull that measured 20 1/8'', the thing was a beast.

My buddie accidentally drew this moose permit.  :chuckle:

Anybody have info on it?

He at says it has a 90% success rate for moose with 65 inch spread or better, but it's guieded only with a cost around 20K for that and flight in. :yike:

I drew the Unguided tag(DM829) for there in 2001, had a transporter take us in and drop us off. I ended up getting a 65" bull. There can be issues with griz there. Had one come in and pack off one whole side of ribs before we got to even see him. There are some shady what the locals call semi guides in that the permit holder pay them under the table. I think you can do better than 20K for the guide though. Might have your friend contact Charlie Green(my transporter) in Galena and see if he can suggest a guide.

Thanks for the info.

So the bear tiped the ribs out before you found the moose? :yike:

No I shot the moose in the evening crossing a slough. By the time we got it cut up in the boat and back to camp it was 1:30 in the morning. We decided to cover it with a tarp and leave it in the boat. I woke to grunting and we got out there the moose had grabbed one whole set of ribs and packed it off. Believe me that side of ribs is more than enough for a man to load. A camp further down river lost 3/4 of thier moose to a bear that hit there camp 3 consecutive nights. Plenty of wolves in the area also.

Alaska Draw Results are out.

Any of you get drawn?

I did for Black Bear this October on Prince of Wales.

Just out of curiosity, why a draw for a black bear hunt on POW vs. just going up and doing a non-resident hunt?

Fair enough. Just figured I'd ask since I know I'm on POW every year hunting deer too. Haven't decided to take a black bear yet, but don't have to do a draw for it. Have you had any luck spotting the elk at the north end of the island yet? They aren't spotted often, but they are there.
