Mule Deer Help Please!
« on: December 29, 2008, 04:24:24 PM »
Hello all,

I have not hunted much for deer since moving to WA because I fell in love with elk hunting (archery). My son is now starting to archery hunt and I've been looking at all the nice Muley bucks you folks have been posting on here and I'm drooling. I want to start hunting Muley again so I can get my son out in the field more then just for a couple days elk hunting. We will be hunting the west side for elk but I want to hunt the east side for Muleys.

Does anyone know a place that would be a good start for my son to first, see a good number of muleys, and second a place that would be good for him to learn how to stock them. I have always loved hunting muleys in CA when I was younger. I usually still hunting them there because it was mainly forest that you hunted in. Here it looks like you can find some good open ground to spot and stock as well as timber hunt these great deer. So any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance and for all the super pics that are getting me wanting to hunt deer again.

The only thing that I can offer would be first to start applying for limited draw units. For archery deer you can draw a tag every 4 or 5 years. Some guys are lucky enough to draw every other year. Just not me. LOL. In the mean time look at the harvest reports for this state. You can find them on the WDFW web site. After you find a general area you need to get out this spring and summer. I would suggest north central wa. The closer to Canada the better. Look for shed antlers and food and water sources. Hunting over water in Sept. can be very productive when it is still warm. Consider a tree stand or ground blind. They can also increase your odds if in the right place. All of these things can be done with your son. I put my 2 1/2 year old in a pack on my back while scouting. He loves it and is already learning a lot. Good luck. Feel free to PM me if you would like.

Thanks guys,

Yes, we will only be archery hunting. We will be spending most of our hunting time in Sept. elk hunting but I want to also be able to take some time to chase some muleys around. We live east of Seattle so I was hoping to find a place no more then a three hour drive to hunt since we will only be hunting weekends for muleys. We will not be road hunting and would love a place to do some walking and stocking. I have never hunted muleys in WA so that's why I'm asking for some areas to start finding our own way around.

thanks again for any assistance you can provide. Would love to get him out scouting and maybe my daughter.
