Broken sheds

Found the bigger one on Jan. 1st while snowmobiling. The latest 1 I'm not sure what's going on with it, but appears kind of broke. The dark colored tip end is like the very outer layer of bone has been stripped/broken away, not sure. It was laying in the open, no whitening, so should be this years, also no chew marks on it so not done by a critter chewing on it.

not velvet, that was my first thought till I looked closer. almost looks like it had a very small layer of outer bone sanded off. Maybe excessive rubbing
Crappy day of hunting though, if it wasn't for the dog finding the two dinkers, would have been skunked.

This set has the same sorta thing going on... No breaks but it's almost as if the outer layer of the bone broke off exposing the marrow...

That's a good way to describe it.
Because the 2 point tips are still rounded, maybe the velvet was never scraped all the way off and then somehow rotted away the outer layer of bone.

Perhaps the deer lost the vevet off the antler in that area before it was completely formed. That would certainly leave an eroded appearance to the surface.
Nice find!

fishnfur, that sounds like the most plausible idea
