.30-378 VS 300 RUM

I have always thought that my next rifle would be the .30-378, but now I am warming up to the 300 RUM. I would appreciate your opinion, or maybe some other suggestions in .30 CAL or 338.

the top end on the 30-378 is about 3800 fps for a 180 grain bullet vs 3550 for the RUM thats the diff.

I personally perfer the weatherby but to each his own.

not much difference in the round but the big difference is money. You will get more bang for your buck with the rum. I researched this for months before i made me choice. The gun and ammo are to much money for my blood. Even if you reload it is way more. And then the difficulty reloading. the steep shoulder on the weatherby's is what makes it tough. At least that is what i have heard and read. But both are great calibers.

I think a 338RUM is in my future.  I think I'd lean toward the RUM vs. the Weatherby.  UM brass is a less money that Weatherby brass; and loaded ammo is at least half the cost of Weatherby.

I've played with both quite a bit and got rid of the 30-378. With 200 gr. accubonds I only got 200fps more out of the 30-378. Weatherby brass is a couple of bucks a piece and not always available around here. My 300 RUM is pushing 200 gr accubonds at 3175fps with 95gr. of retumbo. The RUM will do all I'll ever want out of a big 30 cal.

I have a 338-378 and a 300 ultra mag and they are both easy to load for.but when shooting don;t see much difference in there abilities. The 338 weighs a little more.

the cost and availability of brass and ammo keeps me out of the big webbys. I love my 257, but I can squish rounds out of cheap 7mag brass in a pinch. 7 mag is a lot easier to buy then 378 brass.

ballistically they are very close, passions sounds like a very fast 30-378. if you are gonna go with a propreiatary round might as well go up to the big dog, tha lazzaroni.

I've chrongraphed both with various loads as I have owned both Cals at one point.  The Weatherby's max loads are much faster despite what the manuals say.  I sold both as I felt they were over kill.  I prefer the 300 Wby to both

3800 FPS???  I don't think so. 

I own a 30-378 weatherby and absolutely love the gun.  I also just purchased a 300 RUM for my brother and I am going to tinker with it on reloading. 

The factory ammo is extremely high priced.  If you don't reload.  Purchase a RUM.  Still, factory prices are high but not as high as the Weatherby.

Brass prices are not that bad for this gun.  I was getting 8-10 reloads ouf my brass before I saw signs of separation.  That brings the cost down considerably.  Remember you are buying Norma brass vs Remington brass.  You are stepping up in quality.

Get the Mark V action if you get the WB, it comes with an excellent factory brake as well.

Confuse yourself even more and throw the 300 Weatherby in the Mark V ultralight.  Lugging around them cannons can be a real drag sometimes if you go in deep.

I had the same dilemma and decided up on the .300 RUM.  I have only had it for a few weeks.  Waiting for backordered Nosler Brass and a backordered scope before I start shooting.
Ultimately I decided that I know more people shooting the .300 RUM that can help me for guidance should I have trouble getting a hand load to shoot in small patterns.
