Yeah it's critical habitat but he most likely made a poor decision that SNOWBALLED into a costly/embarrassing/horrible situation. I highly doubt there's going to be huge die off as a result of this damage. I don't know the guy so maybe I'm wrong, but be sensible and get a dozer and get his rig out of there. Obviously it's already going to be costly, no sense on making absurdly costly by making him use a friggin helicopter that he could possibly have to pay (depending on his financial situation) on the rest of his life.Well said. I sure hope we get to hear the final outcome of this.

It's not the huge deal these guys make it out to be. No need to try and ruin his life. BS, it's all critacle winter range and the dip sh@ made a conscious decision to ignore that fact and go off the two track. That is completely unacceptable and he should lose his jeep for the habitat restoration. Looks to me like he made a mistake and it's going to cost him. He's lucky to be alive. He didn't destroy the hillside. Grass will still grow there and will have zero impact on animals. Zero. Get a grip. The world isn't gonna stop turning over his mistake. I Ibet not even 1 animal is impacted by that.

I have zero sympathy for the guy. If an airlift is what is required to get him out, so be it. Why should you feel sorry for him and not want to make things worse? He clearly ignored the signs, and drove- off road- into a sensitive area. He is lucky he didn't roll that thing already. What then? Maybe there would have been an expensive rescue mission, maybe a responder gets hurt trying to save his life? Just dumb all around. We hear too much talk these days of the pussification of America. This is a good example. "Poor guy has suffered enough, why ruin his life over this mistake"... Why doesn't he just own up and take care of it no matter the cost? He did it, the taxpayers didn't. He chose to drive down there, he should take the responsibility to remedy the situation- whatever that costs, Airlifts, fines, rehab, etc. I'll bet he won't do that again...
The vitriol is waist deep on this one Some useful, some of it is silly in my mind. The fine should be flat rate in my opinion. Steep fine. None of this "whatever it costs to fix the ground..." nonsense. How do you fix moss, old sagebrush and crumbly rock? When dealing with this kind of thing, it helps to maintain perspective. This clown wasn't doing it to scare animals off wintering ground and to tear up the hillside. When little kids splash around in the shallows and reeds, they aren't doing it because they hate Crappie nests.Ignorance is the problem here and education (with a fine) is the way to handle it.Honestly the most shocking thing to me is that incredible confidence in the Jeep.
As a HUGE supporter of ATV/UTV's, this whole deal makes a great statement for our user group. ATV's are not the only vehicle out there that destroys resources......Yet a lot of folks are against them and do not feel they should be allowed on the forest roads. Are you one of those anti ATV people? How would you feel that because of this guys actions the FS decides to close down the roads to Jeeps, P/U, Car, Cycle, etc.?

This guy is clearly not on a road.
