Building hunt points?
« on: February 26, 2015, 03:28:30 PM »
Looking into starting to build my points up. Should I just apply knowingly that I won't get selected or do the ghost points

You should always apply for a hunt, as long as you'll be able to do the hunt, if drawn. Just pick one that you have almost zero chance of drawing. You don't need lots of points to draw, you only need luck.

There is no harm in applying if you can hunt if drawn. The cost is the same to apply for a hunt or a ghost point. Waiting until you "have enough points to draw" to apply in Washington for quality hunts is a fool's errand.

1 in each category.

Fastest would be to get poacher points.  If you turn in a poacher and it goes to a conviction, you can get 10 points (per poacher).  So it could be your first year to 'buy' a point, but if you caught three poachers you'd have 31 points which I think would be higher than anyone else in the state.

To get points the person you turn in doesn't need to be convicted.

I always ask my clients how many points they had.  The replies are all over the board. Seems like most are either low or high.  One client with 2 three with 3 a couple of 4's 5's then near max with 14 and up.  Like someone said if you have the time go for it.

One of the hunts I put in for I have drawn at 3 points and another time at 9 points. So it pays to keep putting in because you never know when you might draw. The only reason I would personnaly put in for points option is if I new for certain I couldn't take time off that year

My 2 cents, apply for the best hunt you want, but don't let the point system ruin your yearly hunting traditions.  I'm at 19 points for all elk categories and 11 for deer, I put in for the best hunts on the east side, when I don't draw, I don't hunt elk.  Lucky for me I hunt Idaho every year for elk, but man do I miss my west side yearly elk hunting camp. Getting a lot of points is almost a curse if you want more than a spike hunt on the east side, like bobcat said, it's not how many points you have, it's just being damn lucky.  Do yourself a favor, apply for the weapon you hunt with and go after the tag you want, but, don't give up on your yearly hunts.  One day you'll wake up and be old, and still waiting for that once in a lifetime tag.  Just go hunt  :twocents:

You probly will never draw if you wait till you "have enough points to put in". I've heard this from a few friends and I agree with what's said above. Even low pts your odds increase if you apply every year.
