I thought it was his windpipe when I saw that I really didn't investigate too much. Just confirmed I hit where I was aiming and moved on lol

Bolt .243 or 6mm  pushing an 87gr V-Max.  Bucks wind pretty well, but it can leave a pretty sizable exit wound.
Good glass and you can take them at a pretty fair distance.

I like to snowshoe in winter, wearing white camo and carry a light black gun around the rims of the canyons.  If the wind is right, I can wack 1 before they see me.

A shotgun works well calling at times.

Depends on where ya hunt.
Spent most of my $$ on huntin, fishin & retrievin dogs, the rest I just pretty much wasted.

Well folks the time has come. I placed an order for an AR. It's a Mossberg MMR Hunter. It should be here within the week. Now for the next choice, what do I put on top of it....

I LOVE the Nikon predator BDC for 223 AR and coyotes. I think the circle is great for running dogs. :twocents:

My Weatherby Vangard in .22-250 with 4-12x scope was stolen some years back and I've never bothered to replace it. It was a flat shooter, though, and I've missed it - especially recently. So I just ordered a Savage Axis II XP in .223 Rem. It comes with the accutrigger, a 3-9x Weaver scope, is bore-sighted & has great reviews -should arrive next week. I'd be curious to know if anyone else here is using one (Axis) for shooting the pesky little critters at any range more than 100 yards.

Here in the area we have way too many yotes running around and the population needs to be reduced. As soon as I can figure out what type of ammo shoots best in it, I'll be working on the population issue. I can't help but wonder how they're impacting the deer population. I'll gladly dispatch a few of them if it means more deer around in the next couple of years. I'm going to have to learn to preserve the hides, but that's another thread.

A 223 is a 223, I've used the round since the mid 1960's pelt hunting and doing control work, in bolt guns, AR's and combination guns.  The one thing to keep in mind is that the first shot is the very most important shot your going to take and 90+percent of the dogs you kill will be with that shot, you will lose more coyotes because you forgot to chamber a round or your scope is too powerful or you forgot to reset it to the lowest power than because you didn't have a second shot.

Bullets, the Holy Grail of bullets is a fur friendly bullet that will reliably drop coyotes at all ranges, two bullets have done that for me.

The 40gr NBT in the 223 loaded hot and the 22-204 loaded hotter.  I can't remember a splash wound or an exit other than shards of jacket in pin hole exits.  I will say I've never shot a predator over 150yards with it.

The second is the Speer 52gr HP Varmint bullet.  I've shot it out of the 222 Rem, 5.6x50R Mag and 22-250.  It seems to work at all speeds and has been surprisingly accurate in all of them.  It s an old bullet, huge HP and doesn't have a BC that isn't even mentionable but it just keeps on working.

Byron South really likes the 60gr V-Max out of the 223.

I've played with the 6mm's in the 6x45mm and the 6mm-204, the 58gr V-max has been great on larger winter coyote up north, I took it down south and it was brutal on slighter built lighter furred coyotes down there.

I don't have a lot of experience on cats but have shot a lot of fox and the 22 Hornet, 218 Bee, down loaded 222 and 223's and a cast bullet in the 300 Savage have left me with good pelts and that was in the days of $100 red.

My favorite rigs for hunting called coyotes and saving pelts, Bolt guns in 6mm-204(58gr V-Max at 3600fps) and 22-204(40gr NBT at 3950fps)topped with a 1.5x6x40mm scope, a giant FOV for close in and heavy cover preds and enough X's to extend ranges reliably to 300 yards(pretty much my limit shooting over sticks in field situations), a combo gun in 5.6x50R Mag(52 gr Speer HP) under a 2 3/4" full choked 12ga topped with a 1x4x20mm scope again even more FOV and 4x for a shot again to 300 yards, and a bolt gun in 22-250(52gr Speer HP) topped with a 2.5x10x40mm scope.  All are equipped with plain duplex reticles as they all shoot flat enough that I can hold on fur to 300 yards.

Welcome to predator hunting, call in that first coyote you will hooked.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Alright gentlemen, I have my new toy in hand, and have my scope mounted. I need to get this puppy sighted in. The only rifle range I'm familiar with is the Kenmore gun range. Hoping to get in there this week after work and get everything buttoned up. Then it's game on!

No no no no......

Lets take the AR's......go for a walk up the hill, set up a few targets with a good back stop and fire off a few. This coming weekend is looking decent for a walk.

Also, now that you have the shooter in hand we can talk break in. You going to do anything or just starting flinging lead?

Well I'm gna strip it down completely tonight. Like all new guns from the factory it's well lubricated lol. Gna give it a good scrub. Don't plan on going bananas when it comes time to shoot either. Nice and easy break in, the fun will come with the critters it takes.

If we are talking barrel break in, it's a great way the get a heated discussion started.  I am a firm believer in it and others think it's pure BS.

Well lets get it started then!

I don't know what is the right way.....blaze away or the OCD. Personally, when my AR was new, I shot one round and cleaned x10. Then 2 rounds clean x10. Then 5 rounds clean x 5. Then of course I went out and blazed away and ran about 300 rounds way way to fast.
