Winchester long beard XR range test
« on: March 06, 2015, 06:31:52 PM »
Me and a buddy tried out the long beard today we were shooting 3 inch five shot 1.75 ounce 1200 fps. We started with his Mossberg 835 with 28 inch barrel. The results were not great at all at 40 yards with four shots he never got over 35 hits in a ten inch circle at 40 yards. Then we tried my wife's 11'87 with a 24 inch barrel and it did great absolutely destroyed the target at 40 this will be her turkey load. Next was my Super Black Eagle with 26 inch barrel and once again was not great at all about the same as the 835. I am getting well over 100 hits in a ten inch circle at 40 yards with the eight bucks a box Kent diamond shot 5 shot 3.5 inch 2.25 ounce. I have killed a handful of turkeys with this load and have never had one run, but because that Kent stuff really kicks the s%&t out of me when I saw I should get 3.5 inch performance out of a 3 inch with the long beard stuff I hopped on it. I just bought a new benelli montefeltro 20 gauge that I would like to try on turkeys. So now am trying to decide if I should get some more 3.5 inch kent or bust out the 20 and get some federal 7 shot for it.

What chokes were those different guns shooting?

The Remington and Benelli chokes should be the same. It'd be interesting to see what happens if you swapped chokes gun to gun.

Me and my wife are shooting the same primos brand turkey choke, not sure the model without checking. I do not know what my buddy was shooting besides that it was extra full.

Is yours extra full? If not I would start there. I would suggest full at the very least.

I'd be trying some different chokes and bet you'll find something that works. It's like a rifle. Different barrels, different guns, different patterns.

At 40 yards with the LB XR 6 shot 3 1/2" shell I did pretty good with my 835 and factory choke .695 I have chatted with Trulock chokes and will be getting a tighter choke tube before we head out for Turkey season. Going to go with either the .683 Carlsons or the .680 Trulock choke. My suggestion to you would be get a little bit tighter of a choke.

If you guys really want to pursue it, you can call Carlson choke tubes. Tell them what gun you're shooting and what anmo you're shooting and they'll recommend a tube to you. I've done it twice. Gone with their suggestion and never looked back. I think it's www.choketube.com

Good point jackelope they do a great job at Carlsons. The pic is flipped sideways don't understand why it happens but oh well. My wife shoots a Carlsons out of her 500 and it throws great patterns. Carlsons came out with a choke tube for the LB XR as well.

If you go down to a 20 i don't think i would shoot  7's :dunno: That would not give you a very effective range.   I would go with heavyshot 6's and a good turkey choke

I shoot 3.5" Longbeard XR's #5 out of my Rem 870 24" turkey gun with a Kicks choke and have groups at 40yds that have too many holes for me to count.  Love em.

Took the shotguns back out again today. I tried my other turkey choke, I got just over 100 hits into a 8.5 inch by 11 inch piece of paper 32 hits into the turkey head and and neck, and 12 hits into the brain and spine. The target was one I printed at home that derby city calls lets you save then printout. I also shot my wife's gun once again she got 175 hits to the paper, with over 60 to the turkey head and neck, with 25 hits into the brain and spine. I was once again shooting at 40 yards. So my wife's gun is still shooting these shells a lot better then mine, but I think we are both good to go. I also bought some Federal Premium Mag-Shok heavyweight 20 guage 6 shot. Ill give those a try once they show up for my new gun.
