Wyoming Deer/Pronghorn Combo advice please
« on: March 08, 2015, 09:24:35 PM »
For a graduation present I am taking my son hunting next fall to Wyoming. I wanted to do a combo hunt, we both have 4 points for both Deer and Pronghorn. I was thinking Unit 66 for Pronghorn, and trying for a general tag for deer and hunting 160 or 171. Anyone with a little experience or advice on the unit choice, your input would be greatly appreciated.  We would have about a week in state. Only buying a deer tag for him, so we are hoping for 2 Pronghorns and one mule deer buck. Should be an epic trip no matter what, we will be tent camping.
If your gonna be Dumb you better be Tough

171 is the Windriver Indian Reservation. You'll need either to pay a guide to hunt there or be a member of their tribe or a reciprocating tribe. 160 is a good unit for deer and is the region E tag, which is good, but with four points, I'd consider these units for you and your son:120, or the area of 78, 79 and 80. Region E is a great tag, don't get me wrong, but you may enjoy a limited entry hunt more for deer with your points. Is this for a 2015 or 2016 hunt? If 2016, you'll have more opportunites becoming available with 5 points, especially for deer. You're in the area now where some great hunts become available with 4 and 5 points. If you're willing to pay the special tag prices, you'll get into a lot more options of great deer areas.
Wishing I was fishing...or in Wyoming

GU gave you some good advice. I deer hunted those areas and they can be good now that they went to Limited draw. Area 47 or 48 for antelope are not too far away. 48 did have some nice animals in it but those areas have been hit hard by drought and are still coming back. Area 52 has some decent antelope in it. Call the local biologist for those areas and see what they say. You'll be hard press to kill decent antelope and a buck deer with only a week of time.
Good luck
