Gonna need a pig!
« on: March 09, 2015, 08:54:16 PM »
We are gonna need a whole pig for roasting for my niece's graduation from college party.
Party is going to held in mid July.
I think we need a pig in the 80-100# range maybe up to 125ish.
Anyone have a reliable source you would recommend. :)

I think a bunch of folks raise hogs on here.  I have a hereford gilt in that range but I am raising her to breed.   :sry:
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

I've convinced my wife to let me roast a pig when the weather is a bit warmer. Mind sharing where you picked it up from?

I checked C&C they are kinda pricey especially for a frozen pig $4.40 lb.
I do buy a lot of my primal cuts from them for large party occasions though.
Called all the butcher shops in my area and was able to get a decent deal on a fresh
pig ready to go $3.39 lb for a 80-150 #'er.

Thanks for the input, good looking out

The price in the real world is down right now.  You should be able to get a 100# pig for about $200.  If you cook it above ground it needs  to be scalded, skin on, if in a pit not a big deal.

I saw one on CL the other day, 450# live weight for $75.00. I was tempted think of the sausage you could make.

Just ordered all the components to build the "HOG FATHER"  :yike:  the rotisserie of all rotisserie's  8)

Looked at many of the pro built setups they want $800-$1500 for and decided I needed a project. Most everyone's so called heavy duty model will only handle a max recommended spit load of 80-125 #'s due to motor's max torque production of around 180 in.lbs they sell that motor for $299 alone. I found a 1/4 hp motor that produces 600 in.lbs at 6 rpm for an overhung load of 350+lbs for $325.

All total I will be in it for $500 and it will be far superior to anything of it's style offered commercially for $800-$1500+

Can't wait until all the parts come in and I get it all together :brew:

Can't go wrong with the luau pig I will agree  Done that many times throughout the years being as I'm part Hawaiian. We used to have a family luau every summer when most of our island elders were still alive. I just thought I would expand my skill set and try the rotisserie action with the pig maybe a whole deer or a couple elk quarters in the fall. :dunno: Maybe a HW gathering?
