.243 powder
« on: March 11, 2015, 07:28:10 PM »
My father in law gave me a .243 a year ago or so and I'm just now getting around to playing with it. It is nothing fancy, just a Savage 110, but it is in great condition and hardly used, maybe 40 rounds through it is all. I'm going to do hand loads for it. I purchased some Sierra Game King 100grain bullets for it, and am looking for what powder you guys have found to be the most stable. In the Lyman book it says the IMR4350 and Vargat are the most popular. What are you guys using?

H-4895 and 95 gr. partions. Lotta deer with that load. Picked up some 4350 awhile back, but haven't messed with it yet.

I've been working up a load with Varget and H414.  I will chime in with results as I get back to the range.

IMR 4320.  A mostly forgotten propellant, but it works great and seems to be more readily available than IMR 4350.  Sierra reloading manual lists bullets all the way up to 100 grains for this powder and that is what I use.  Accuracy is on par with any factory offering.  Plus it has a nice burnt powder smell aroma after you fire the shot that gets your heart pumpin'.

I have used IMR 4350 for over 25 years.  It has been very consistent, 1/2 MOA at 100 yds.
My 243 is a varmint gun and shoots the 87gr Hornady Vmax as above and the older 87gr spire point nearly as well.
Not sure how the 100gr Sierra will do.
Spent most of my $$ on huntin, fishin & retrievin dogs, the rest I just pretty much wasted.

IMR 4350 here too.  I settled on it long ago (25+ years) and have never deviated.

I got best performance with a 95gr Nosler Partition & IMR 4350 @ 41.4gr  Right at 1 MOA and chrono  at 3000 (+/- a few) fps.

My ancient Nosler book, circa 1976, shows a max load at 42gr.  as always, work up to max loads with caution.

I've used 4831 for the heavy bullets with good results. With the 55 ballistics I use H380.

Varget is like butter....Makes just about everything a little better.
H414 is another good choice.
Seriously Varget and the 51mm case were just about made for each other.

I use IMR4350 as well. 100 gr Hornaday interlock bullet. Lights out from prairie dogs to mule deer bucks.

Imr 4350 for me also. 42.3 grains with either 90 accubond or 95 ballistic tip result in same point of impact for me to 300 yards.

Well, good thing I have a couple pounds of 4350. Seems to be the powder of choice. Thanks for the input folks. I'll try loading some up.

I have a 243 win. savage model 10 and I use imr4831, hornady brass and 95 gr. sst bullets and 43gr. powder and I shoot a dime all day long at 100 yards.  A silver dollar at 300 yards.  This is with using a sled. Using a bipot I shoot nickle groups at a hundred yards.  It seems to work for me and I tried a lot of different powders and this setup works for me for preditor and deer.

I used Dan Newberrys OCW load development system with the following; Remington Brass, BR-2 large rifle primers, IMR 4350 powder, and Sierra Game King 100gr bullets. This was my best grouping.

As an addition to all the other fine powders mentioned, I've found that IMR 4064 does well in my .243 rifle...so you might keep it in mind if you can't find some of the others. Here's a OCW test I was doing this past weekend using a Speer 75gr and various charges of IMR 4064:

I've used imr4064, varget, re15, re17, re22, imr7828 and prob a few more I can't remember. With 100+gr. bullets my go2 powder is re22. I can get a little more speed with re17 which is almost identical to imr4350 but it is so temp unstable(re17) that I shy away from it.

Ive had great luck with R19 and 85gr boattails. Dont remember the powder grainage off hand. I've always liked 1 grain under max.
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.
