Bread & Butter Pickle Recipes?
« on: March 22, 2015, 12:15:13 PM »
Does anyone have a good bread and butter pickle recipe? I really want to pickle some beets and I tried some bread and butter beets awhile back and they were delicious.

I've had good luck with pre made Pickling spices from the store. You can make your own if want but sometimes Im lazy. Just need to cook the beets to remove the skin. Cut them up into cubs. Boil spices in water, vinegar etc. Put beets into jars, cover with pickling mixture, put lids on and hot water bath cook them for a few minutes. Most of the spices have recipes on them and instructions. We do beets and cucumbers(pickles) every year and they are good for snacking. Sometimes I will add jalapeno's to the bottom of the jar to add some spice.

I pull most of our pickling recipes off All Recipies or freshpreserving.com never had a bad batch. Adjust to your personal taste, we add crunched red peppers, jalapeños and whole garlic to almost everything, whether it needs it or not.

Is there such a thing as a good bread & butter pickle recipe?

My parents and grandparents on both sides used to eat them with a fork right our of the jar.  Grandparents on my mothers side would hold huge pickle parties after a big garden harvest.  Almost everything going into bread & butter jars.  I felt I must have been adopted :o  Not sure if anything other than pickled beats will make me gag faster!  I'll eat my weight in kosher dills, but B&B's are just nasty to me.

I inherited all my grandmothers recipes.  Family keeps asking me to make some B&Bs so the thread interests me.  Maybe I'll dig through her book and see if it's anything special or different than what comes up on here.  I'll need to find a guinea pig before I ship any to family as I have no idea what a good B&B tastes like...if there is such a thing :chuckle:
