If you mean the OR Snake River Unit: About 4 years ago I did an August backpack trip from the Warnock Corral, down Temperance Creek to the Wisnor Place (I heard the cabin burned down recently), then north on the FS trail, side-hilling to just short of the Two Corral School, then up to Somers Ridge between the towers and the point (no trail on the uphill), then back along the rim road to Warnock Corral. About 33 miles. We saw 4 bears, including what was probably the largest bear I've seen in the wild.
The gate at Warnock closes prior to archery elk season, but I don't know exactly when. You don't want to plan to drive beyond it and find it closed for your hunt. The rim road beyond Warnock is real rough in some places. I averaged about 4 mph in a full size pickup. It was not meant to be more than a fire road.
Incredible country. Plan for your water, if you go down in the canyon.
