Oregon Snake River Spring Bear Tag
« on: March 21, 2015, 11:49:40 AM »
I drew a snake river spring bear tag this year. I'm new to this unit and am looking for any help I could get. A trail head, an area of the unit, good places to camp, etc. Really would appreciate any help that you guys can give me. Would love to put a bear down this spring.

Two suggestions: 1. post the actual hunt area you drew. The Snake River touches several. 2. Mention what research you've done so far.

That's what I was wondering- is it the Snake River GMU in Oregon?

If you mean the OR Snake River Unit:  About 4 years ago I did an August backpack trip from the Warnock Corral, down Temperance Creek to the Wisnor Place (I heard the cabin burned down recently), then north on the FS trail, side-hilling to just short of the Two Corral School, then up to Somers Ridge between the towers and the point (no trail on the uphill), then back along the rim road to Warnock Corral. About 33 miles.  We saw 4 bears, including what was probably the largest bear I've seen in the wild.

The gate at Warnock closes prior to archery elk season, but I don't know exactly when.  You don't want to plan to drive beyond it and find it closed for your hunt. The rim road beyond Warnock is real rough in some places. I averaged about 4 mph in a full size pickup.  It was not meant to be more than a fire road.

Incredible country.  Plan for your water, if you go down in the canyon.

Yes It is an Oregon tag and the unit is the snake river. I've done some research but haven't came up with a lot of information yet.

Oregon tag?
Or Idaho?

Isn't Idaho OTC?
I think that is right which rules out Idaho.
Idaho spring tags aren't OTC down in that country that I know of. There's a drawing, unless I've always been mistaken......

It's entirely possible. My comment was a total guess.

Can't give away any spots but I will say most of the unit has bears and most of the unit requires a lot of work. Watch out for rattles and be mindful of where you kill your bear. A lot of meat goes bad in that unit. Especially if you're way in there and your bear rolls to a bottom. A lot of areas that usually aren't accessible should be this year. Good luck!
