I will never understand the no rangefinders allowed rules on these things. So silly, if your really wanting to promote ethical hunting in real world situations I can't think of a better starting place for ethics than positive knowlage of your range.

Its about having fun and who has the best skills at shooting and judging yardage. Some people love hunting this way, I did for years and killed a lot of animals and won a lot of turnaments. One thing I can say, I never won any contest in spelling. Ha!

3d tournaments are a tournament. Yardage estimation is one skill needed to do well in these tournaments. It is a discipline of target archery... not neccesarily hunting practice. Even though lots of guys use it for that.

Yep,all the targets are 3D animal targets. Deer , elk , bear, mt.goats, sheep, moose, gators , lions, we even have a Bigfoot . Lots of fun shooting these tournaments.we do have 1 3D shoot in August the "Wire Shoot " where we do let you use rangefinders. It is a shoot that does just what you described. It challenges you to  make an ethical shot , there are some shot scenarios where it would be better off not taking the shot and score a 0 instead of taking the shot and score a -10.

Now that sounds fun. The no range finder thing just has to much of the snobbish type archer persona feel to it. I'm sure it isn't but there's always been that kind of bad rap lingering in between the weapons. I practice judging range and I'm pretty good at it. But it's still the most ethical practice to know your range and the best way to do that is a range finder. I can pretty accurately  judge range out to 50. I won't take a shot on an animal with out ranging it if it's over 25-30ish and I've got one pin out to 30. Just seems like you could get away from the no range finder rule, or have separate classes in the shoot

I remember a couple of years ago Tacoma allowed a range finder class . I thought it was pretty funny that the guy that won the BHFS had a higher score than the range finder class winner . My wife and I carry range finders when we are in the field but we like the challnge of no range finders at 3D shoots and we tend to stay away from the shoots that allow them .

Back to the shoot , bowpredator , I've been shooting by longbow for a whole 8 days now and I'm sure I'm ready for this shoot :o . What can I expect for the longer shots on a trad. shoot ?

I'm in! Gonna be a long drive for me but I love traditional shoots. Looking forward to meeting some more traditionalists too!
May my presence go unnoticed, may my shot be true, may the blood trail be short.

Amen

Most of your trad shots are between 20-40yrds with a few closer ones and a couple that are stretched out.
